He also led off Olympus&#8217; state and class-record setting 4&#215;50 medley relay (1:34.63) and Springville\u2019s <strong>Cameron Green<\/strong>\u00a0set a new Class 5A standard in the 50 free with a time of 20.69 during prelims.<\/p>\n<p>The Timpview girls claimed their fifth championship crown in program history &#8211; and first since 2009 &#8211; with a final score of 290 over Olympus (234) and Wasatch (199.5). Olympus captured their first-ever state title on the boys&#8217; side with 297 points ahead of defending champion Brighton (237) and Wasatch (184).<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2020-utah-5a-state-championships\/high-school\/2020\/February\/14?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fhigh-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE<\/a> for full results and team scores.<\/p>\n<h1>Girls Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<p>1. Timpview &#8211; 290<br \/>\n2. Olympus &#8211; 234<br \/>\n3. Wasatch \u2013 199.5<br \/>\n4. Park City \u2013 150<br \/>\n5. East \u2013 149<\/p>\n<p>Timpview began their winning ways as <strong>Annie Reichner <\/strong>(27.36), <strong>Kate Hansen <\/strong>(30.42), <strong>Rachel Oyler <\/strong>(24.38), and <strong>Katelyn Teng <\/strong>(25.15) won the opening 4\u00d750 medley relay in 1:47.31, six-tenths ahead of runner-up Bountiful\u2019s 1:47.99. Bountiful&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elliott Howe\u00a0<\/strong>powered home in 55.81 for a win in the 100 back to defend her title.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after helping her medley relay team win gold, Oyler was back in the water to successfully defend her state title in the 50 free with a quick 23.54. The senior also won the 100 fly for the second-consecutive year after getting her hands to the wall in 56.43 for a two-second victory.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish Fork&#8217;s <strong>Madison Parker\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:50.67 to win the event by nearly two full seconds. The freshman then went on to earn the second state title of her young career shortly after in the 100 free, sprinting to the wall in 50.89.<\/p>\n<p>Cottonwood\u2019s <strong>Emma Walker\u00a0<\/strong>dominated the 200 IM, taking first in 2:04.62 to win by over four seconds before going on to win the 100 breast in 1:02.70 for the second year in a row. Her teammate\u00a0<strong>Jessica Loyd\u00a0<\/strong>dropped two seconds from her prelims time to win the 500 free in 5:04.82.<\/p>\n<p>Wasatch&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trevi Ogilvie\u00a0<\/strong>(24.71),\u00a0<strong>Addison Lay\u00a0<\/strong>(24.86),\u00a0<strong>Meg Harris\u00a0<\/strong>(25.60), and\u00a0<strong>Madi Christensen\u00a0<\/strong>(24.68) combined in 1:39.85 to win the 4&#215;50 free relay. Oyler (51.22),\u00a0<strong>Annie Robinson\u00a0<\/strong>(54.93), Hansen (53.06), and\u00a0<strong>Gracie Crandall\u00a0<\/strong>(52.88) secured Timpview&#8217;s team title by winning the 4&#215;100 free relay in 3:32.09.<\/p>\n<h1>Boys Meet<\/h1>\n<h2>Top 5 Team Scores:<\/h2>\n<p>1. Olympus &#8211; 297<br \/>\n2. Brighton \u2013 237<br \/>\n3. Wasatch \u2013 184<br \/>\n4. Viewmont \u2013 167<br \/>\n5. Springville \u2013 152<\/p>\n<p>The boys\u2019 meet began as Olympus&#8217; Garstang (22.71), <strong>Alexander Turney <\/strong>(26.53), <strong>Evan VanBrocklin <\/strong>(23.09), <strong>Bridger Sink <\/strong>(22.30) won the opening 4\u00d750 medley relay in 1:34.63 for a three-second victory. Their time broke the Class 5A and overall Utah state record of 1:34.71 set by Brighton in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>VanBrocklin also earned gold in the 100 fly with a time of 50.79. Viewmont&#8217;s <strong>Gavin Willis\u00a0<\/strong>led the charge in the 100 breast as the first of only four swimmers to dip under the minute-marker, doing so in 58.20.<\/p>\n<p>It was a close race in the 200 free as Spanish Fork&#8217;s <strong>Austin Butler\u00a0<\/strong>ultimately swam away with the gold in 1:42.46, just ahead of runner-up\u00a0<strong>Daniel Detjen\u00a0<\/strong>of Brighton&#8217;s time of 1:42.95. Butler earned another gold medal in the 500 free, cruising to first in 4:37.53 for the state title.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after leading off the winning medley relay, Garstang was back in the water to win the 200 IM in 1:53.09 to best the field by over three seconds. He also found himself on top of the podium in the 100 back, clocking in at 48.71 as the only swimmer in the race under the 50-second barrier. His 100 back time broke\u00a0<strong>Jordan Tiffany&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>state mark of 49.29 set earlier this year as well as Green&#8217;s 5A standard of 49.95 swum in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Green<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>splashed-and-dashed his way to the top of the podium in the 50 free, stopping the clock in a quick 20.92. His prelims time of 20.69 broke the previous Class 5A mark of 20.74 set by\u00a0<strong>Long Gutierrez\u00a0<\/strong>in 2013. He proved his sprint talent by also winning the 100 free, getting to the wall over a second faster than the rest of the field in a final time of 46.23.<\/p>\n<p>Springville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Austin Mertz\u00a0<\/strong>(22.23), <strong>Braxton Armstrong\u00a0<\/strong>(21.65),\u00a0<strong>Jordan Pugmire\u00a0<\/strong>(22.59), and Green (20.09) combined to win the 4&#215;50 free relay in a convincing 1:26.56. <strong>Ethan Astle\u00a0<\/strong>(48.80), VanBrocklin (47.82), <strong>Ian Conner\u00a0<\/strong>(48.38), and Garstand (45.83) also won the 4&#215;100 free relay in 3:10.83.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020 Utah 5A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
