It wasn\u2019t out of the realm of possibility, the Pennington School sprinter figured, to take that time into uncharted territory in his high school career.<\/p>\n<p>By his junior season, he\u2019s achieved one of the biggest goals.<\/p>\n<p>Curtiss went 19.42 in the 50 free Friday, taking down <strong>Ryan Murphy\u2019s<\/strong> eight-year-old national prep record of 19.54.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, I went a 19.7 and I was like, oh darn, I\u2019m so close,\u201d Curtiss told Swimming World. \u201cRyan Murphy is one of the best swimmers out there, an Olympian, so that number seemed pretty, pretty far away from me and I didn\u2019t really think I could get it (last year). He set the meet record again as a sophomore, going 19.70 in prelims before repeating as champion in 19.79.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, he eased to a 19.92 in prelims before blasting the 19.42 in finals. He\u2019d been 19.75 at Y Nationals, the native of Yardley, Pennsylvania, representing Hamilton Area Y in New Jersey, as well as setting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-curtiss-breaks-50-freestyle-ymca-national-record-on-night-four\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long-course Y Nationals record in the 50<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Curtiss picked up a silver medal in the 50 free at the World Junior Championships <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-world-junior-swimming-championships-day-3-prelims-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last summer<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/another-for-the-wolfpack-world-juniors-silver-medalist-david-curtiss-sends-2021-verbal-to-nc-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">N.C. State commit<\/a> is coming off a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegeswimming.com\/results\/163655\/event\/14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Knoxville<\/a> in January where he finished second in the 50 free, just behind NC State\u2019s Nyls Korstanje and ahead of Americans <strong>Ryan Held, Jacob Molacek<\/strong> and <strong>Zach Apple<\/strong>, with whom he\u2019ll be contending for an Olympic spot at Trials in June.<\/p>\n<p>Easterns is a meet that has always ranked high in Curtiss\u2019s priorities, as evidenced by his annual time drops. Those gains reflect how seriously he takes competing for his school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me this meet is no different than it was last year,\u201d Curtiss said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost just as important as World Juniors because I\u2019m representing the U.S. at World Juniors but here I\u2019m representing my school. And both are just as important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is two years in a row that he has done his personal-best for the Pennington School,\u201d Pennington coach <strong>George<\/strong> <strong>Ward<\/strong> said. \u201cI always say that any year-round swimmer who does their personal-best for us is an honor.
