“If I can inspire one little black girl or one little black boy, anybody, to get into the water and give it a try, I\u2019ve done myself proud, genuinely. That is the aim in it all.” \u2013 Alice Dearing<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Alice Dearing<\/strong>, the British Open\u00a0water ace,has spoken about her desire to change perceptions and challenge stereotypes and inspire others to get into the water.<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC, <\/a>Dearing also talks about being the only black swimmer on Team GB and her hopes for Tokyo 2020 should she qualify.<\/p>\n

The 2016 world junior open water champion has spoken previously about being subject to racist abuse by a coach who called her \u201ca skinny n-word\u201d when she was 17.<\/p>\n

Five years on, she recalls:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a great experience, I was only 17. It wasn\u2019t said directly to me, it was said to another swimmer and this is a coach that I\u2019ve never spoken to before. I don\u2019t know anything about them, I can\u2019t even remember their name to be honest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a lot of people around me who helped me and helped me understand what was said because I didn\u2019t really process it in the way that I maybe should have. I kind of just tried to laugh it off, I was just going to let it go. I told my coach about it as soon as I heard and he was like \u2018we need to do something about it, it\u2019s not okay that you\u2019re being spoken about like that\u2019.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When contacted by Swimming World, a Swim England spokesman said:<\/p>\n

“Swim England is fully committed to the principles and practice of equality and diversity.<\/p>\n

“The organisation was one of the first national governing bodies in the UK to achieve the Advanced Equality for Sport award through the Sports Council Equality Group.<\/p>\n

“Swim England does not tolerate discrimination – either directly or indirectly \u2013 on any grounds, including race, disability, social class or background, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origins, gender, gender identity, marital status, pregnancy, parental status, carer status, age, religion or belief, or political persuasion.<\/p>\n

“It has procedures in place for people to report concerns, through whistle blowing policies, or via formal complaints in accordance with the Judicial Regulations.<\/p>\n

“All complaints are taken seriously and are treated confidentially in accordance with documented procedures.<\/p>\n

“Due to the confidentiality of complaints, Swim England does not comment on individual cases.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Dearing made her senior Great Britain debut at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia, and she has competed at both subsequent editions with fifth as part of the mixed 5km team relay in Budapest, Hungary, in 2017 her best result to date.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old, who is coached by Andi Manley at Loughborough University, will compete at the opening leg of the FINA Marathon Swim World Series in Doha this weekend ahead of the Olympic qualifier in Fukuoka, Japan, in May.<\/p>\n

She is only the second black woman to have represented Britain in the pool after Achieng Ajulu-Bushell<\/strong> who competed at the 2010 European Championships and for England at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later that year before retiring in 2012.<\/p>\n

Dearing said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been the only black swimmer on Team GB for about five years now. It\u2019s kind of sad because it\u2019s 2020 and I really wish I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always kind of dealt with it, I was like, \u2018it\u2019s just how things are, it\u2019s just the circumstances which I\u2019m in\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dearing is passionate about using her platform to inform and inspire.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s just kind of ingrained within the culture that we don\u2019t swim, that\u2019s not our sport, we do other things.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just been passed down and down and down. Then there\u2019s the water phobia side of it \u2013 that\u2019s another thing which gets passed down from parents to children. Swimming is a life skill, it should be a life skill, it can literally save your life and the fact it gets brushed aside and ignored is concerning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have heard a lot of people say it to me now, like black people like, \u2018I\u2019m too heavy to swim\u2019.<\/p>\n

“And I\u2019m like \u2018You\u2019re not, you\u2019re really not. It\u2019s a complete myth. I do want to talk about my experiences to help show people that it is possible to swim being a black person, being a black woman, having afro hair, it\u2019s completely possible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dearing missed out on qualification for Tokyo when she finished 17th<\/sup> at last year\u2019s World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.<\/p>\n

May will soon be upon us and with it the Olympic qualifier in Japan when she will seek to book her ticket to compete against the likes of Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong>, Ana Marcela Cunha<\/strong>, Xin Xin<\/strong> and Haley Anderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For Dearing, it is not only about making the team but also encouraging others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the most motivated I\u2019ve ever been in the sport. It\u2019s the most I\u2019ve ever enjoyed the sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously a medal would be incredible but it\u2019s such a competitive event and if I can inspire one little black girl or one little black boy, anybody to get into the water and give it a try, I\u2019ve done myself proud, genuinely. That is the aim in it all.”<\/p>\n
