{"id":415211,"date":"2020-02-12T20:34:18","date_gmt":"2020-02-13T03:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=415211"},"modified":"2020-02-12T20:34:18","modified_gmt":"2020-02-13T03:34:18","slug":"ali-center-launches-ali-stingrays-swimmer-scholar-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ali-center-launches-ali-stingrays-swimmer-scholar-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Ali Center Launches Ali Stingrays Swimmer Scholar Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Muhammad Ali<\/strong> Center announced the creation of the Ali Stingrays Swimmer Scholar Program Wednesday, a year-round competitive USA Swimming club that builds <a href=\"https:\/\/alicenter.org\/ali-stingrays-swimmer-scholar-program-provides-college-readiness-support-and-competitive-swimming-skills-for-students-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on an existing pilot program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last October, the Ali Center founded a pilot program providing support for 15 students at W.E.B. DuBois Academy middle school and 10 at Central High School, Ali\u2019s alma mater. Both schools are located in the primarily black West End of Louisville, Kentucky. Swimmers in that program had little to no swimming experience. The Ali Center is partnering with Trident Swim Foundation in an effort receiving financial support from ESPN, the Gheens Foundation and other entities.<\/p>\n<p>The effort is two-fold: To ensure basic swim safety and also allow those engaged by their taste of the sport the opportunity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wave3.com\/2020\/02\/12\/swimmers-channel-spirit-muhammad-ali-stingrays-scholar-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to pursue it at the highest level<\/a>. The safety aspect is both urgent \u2013 the drowning risk for black children ages 5-14 is three times higher than of their white counterparts, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \u2013 and generational, with a USA Swimming Foundation study finding that children whose parents don\u2019t know how to swim have just a 13 percent chance of learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany facets of the community often turn their backs on these kids with regard to swimming, as well as not understanding the required love to teach it and the energy it requires to grow the sport,\u201d Ali Stingrays Coach <strong>T.J. Lechner<\/strong> said in a press release. \u201cI want to be a part of a program that turns all of this around and starts helping students to learn. Love and passion are the foundations to teaching anyone anything, and I know that I have that love and passion to help these kids grow as students and swimmers \u2014 but even more importantly, to grow as people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ali Stingrays are designed to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/ali-center-launches-scholar-swimming-223917771.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extend beyond the pool<\/a>, with the Swimmer Scholar Program incorporated into the center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/alicenter.org\/education\/character-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creating Our Future Program<\/a>, which focuses on students\u2019 \u201ccharacter education\u201d on the basis of Ali\u2019s six core principles: respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, spirituality and giving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuhammad Ali, like all athletes, recognized that dedication and self-confidence are key foundational elements to attaining success not just in one\u2019s career, but in life,\u201d said <strong>Donald Lassere,<\/strong> President and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center. \u201cSo what is most exciting to us about the Ali Stingrays Swimmer Scholar Program is that we have a stake in student\u2019s academic achievement and in building their confidence for when they begin thinking about applying to top tier colleges.
