BRASILIA, Brazil, Sept. 18. THE opening day of the Brazilian national long course championships in the capital city of Brazil, featured the return to world class level swimming by 28 year-old sprinter Fernando Scherer.<\/p>\n

In 1998, Scherer was one of the world's top 50 and 100 meter men, ranking #1 in the world and setting South American records in both the 50 (22.18 seconds ) and 100 meters (48.69) freestyle, but he has done little since. Today he swam a solid 22.71 to win the 50 handily, defeating three-time Olympian Gustavo Borges at 23.18.<\/p>\n

Other men's winners today were: Marcelo Tomazini, 200m breast, 2:18.64 and Luis Lima, 1500m free, 15:54.10.<\/p>\n

Flavia Devaroli, who holds the continental record at 25.89, won the women's 50 free in 26.24. Joanna Maranhao took the 200m breast in 2:37.55, while Olga Beresnyeva edged Olympic and world champion, Yana Klochkova, Ukraine, in the 800m free 8:49.13 to 8:49.35.<\/p>\n
