Schoeman tested positive for GW501516, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GW501516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a drug that is illegal<\/a> and not commercially produced after testing in the mid-2000s deemed it a cancer risk. The World Anti-Doping Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/en\/media\/news\/2013-03\/wada-issues-alert-on-gw501516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued a memo in 2013<\/a> as to its danger as a \u201cblack market substance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fina.org\/sites\/default\/files\/rsa_roland_schoeman_summary_decision-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decision by FINA<\/a> was made at a meeting Jan. 24. The news was first reported <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.nbcsports.com\/2020\/02\/06\/roland-schoeman-doping-ban-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by the Associated Press Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schoeman won three medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics, including gold in the 400 free relay. He claimed silver in the 100 free and bronze in the 50 free. He also represented South Africa at the 2000, 2008 and 2012 Olympics games, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/roland-schoeman-why-stop-when-im-still-getting-better\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">missed qualification for Rio<\/a> in 2016. Schoeman also won three gold and five total World Championships medals. He\u2019s held eight individual world records (two long-course, six short-course) plus the world relay mark from Athens.<\/p>\n<p>At 39, he was training for a run at the Tokyo Games, and the length of the ban makes that still a possibility.
