{"id":413469,"date":"2020-02-01T20:20:37","date_gmt":"2020-02-02T03:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=413469"},"modified":"2020-02-01T20:20:37","modified_gmt":"2020-02-02T03:20:37","slug":"traffic-accident-causes-emory-to-cancel-dual-meet-with-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/traffic-accident-causes-emory-to-cancel-dual-meet-with-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Traffic Accident Causes Emory to Cancel Dual Meet with Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday\u2019s meet between Emory and Georgia was canceled due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/least-1-dead-major-fiery-highway-crash-atlanta-area-n1128196?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fatal traffic accident and fire that closed<\/a> Interstate-85 in Atlanta, but the Bulldogs turned the day into a memorable Senior Day with an impromptu intrasquad scrimmage in which the Bulldogs logged five times that would\u2019ve been NCAA B cuts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harry Homans<\/strong> was faster than the standard in both the 200 free (1:35.71) and 100 fly (47.24). <strong>Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong> undercut the B standard in the 200 fly in 1:45.82. On the women\u2019s side, <strong>Courtney Harnish<\/strong> (1:56.97 in the 200 back) and <strong>Veronica Burchill<\/strong> (4:46.53 in the 500 free) were also quicker than the mark.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/georgiadogs.com\/news\/2020\/2\/1\/swimming-diving-bulldogs-honor-seniors-in-intrasquad-meet.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">release from Georgia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The University of Georgia swimming and diving team faced off in a combined intrasquad scrimmage to round out the regular season Saturday morning at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The original meet scheduled with Emory was cancelled due to a major road accident on I-85 in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Before the meet, the Bulldogs celebrated the 17 members of their 2020 senior class. Those recognized for the women included <strong>McKensi Austin, Veronica Burchill, Mary Claire Cardwell, Sofia Carnevale, Lexi Glunn, Jordyn Gulle, Freida Lim, Meryn McCann, Katherine Parker, Sandra Scott<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan Stout.<\/strong> The honored men were <strong>Charlie Clifton, Jackson Ford, Clayton Forde, Walker Higgins, Josh Horne<\/strong> and <strong>Kevin Miller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to thank the seniors. They&#8217;ve poured their hearts and souls into this program for four years,&#8221; said Tom Cousins Head Coach <strong>Jack Bauerle<\/strong>. &#8220;As a parent, you understand what they&#8217;ve been through. I saw a lot of emotion on the parents&#8217; side, a couple of them who I didn&#8217;t expect it from. It comes as a shock.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes it catches up to the parents faster than the athlete because all of a sudden, this is finished. Anyways, these seniors have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this place, so I just want to say thanks to our kids. They have been pretty neat to watch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the intrasquad meet, the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s events were converted to mixed events to complete a full meet program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was an unusual day, but I hope everybody is alright over in Atlanta, more importantly,&#8221; said Bauerle. &#8220;But I am really proud of what we did here today. We swam really well and learned a few things before SEC&#8217;s. It was a little bit unusual because you are swimming against yourself which is something we do every day. I think they handled it in great fashion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just by and large, it was a really good effort under the circumstances. I wish Emory could have gotten here; it would have been good for them too. They are a class program, coached by one of the best coaches in the country. We enjoy swimming against them. They are one heck of a program. But there&#8217;s not much to say when it&#8217;s intrasquad.
