FRIDAY the Thirteenth was anything but unlucky for former Florida State Seminole Steve parry, the hottest thing to come out of Liverpool since the Beatlers.<\/p>\n<p>Parry, 25, powered his way to two more titles on Day Two of the 2002 British National Short Course Championships in Cambridge, to add to the two he won yesterday.  His best event &#8212; the 200m butterfly &#8212; will be swum tomorrow. <\/p>\n<p>Today, Parry clocked 4:13.09 to take the 400m IM, with Scottish dorsal specialist Gregor Tait second in a new Scottish record, 4.15.92. <\/p>\n<p>In a common plaint by nonbreaststrokers, a smiling Parry commented: &quot;That was tough. I&#39;m going to campaign to get the breaststroke taken out of the event. It was horrible and a real pain, but I knew I had to do well in the breast to win.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Later Parry took the 50m backstroke, clocking 25.39 to Matthew Clay&#39;s 25.45 with the frustrated Tait third in 25.53. <\/p>\n<p>Parry said &quot;I was pretty surprised to win but four out of four events is just brilliant. The time wasn&#39;t brilliant but the afternoon has been tough on my legs. I&#39;ve managed three out of the four as personal best times so it can&#39;t be bad.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>The men&#39;s 100m breaststroke pitted three of the world&#39;s fastest men in the event.  Darren Mew emerged the winner, but his 1:00.26 winning time was slower than expected. Commonwealth champion Adam Whitehead wtouched second in 1:00.80 with Scotland&#39;s Ian Edmond in third. James Gibson, who had the most raw speed in the field, finished fifth.<\/p>\n<p>Mew commented: &quot;Technically, the whole race was terrible, particularly the first two turns. I have been relaxing since the summer tour but never expected to do anything like that.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Double Commonwealth gold medalist Sarah Price won the 100m backstroke in 1:00.15, comfortably ahead of Melanie Marshall at 1:00.73. Fourteen year-old Stephanie Proud take the bronze in 1.02.46. <\/p>\n<p>Alison Sheppard won the 100m freestyle in a talent-laden final.  The 30 year-old Scottish lass who ranks first globaslly in the long course 50m free this year, clocked 54.38, with Karen Pickering second (54.93).<\/p>\n<p>As is her wont, Sheppard was out fast. &quot;I had to take it out hard in the 100m freestyle then grit my teeth and hold on.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Cooke easily annexed the 800m freestyle, leading every stroke of the way and touching in 8:27.66.  &quot;I would have liked to have gone faster and it&#39;s tough to get back into top training, but the hard training is paying off. As yet I&#39;m a bit unsure about whether or not I&#39;ll be going to the European Championships, but I&#39;ll be discussing this with my coach later.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>James Hickman, former short course world record-holder over 200 meters fly, won the 100 tonight in 51.74 to record his eighth title.  His national record stands at 51.02.  Hickman and Parry will go head-to-head in the 200m fly in what should be the premier race of these championships.<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh teammates Kirsty Balfour, 18, and lauren Greenshields, battled all the way in the women&#39;s 200m breast, with Balfour taking her first national title in 2:28.38, 29-hundredths ahead of Greenshields.
