Six years later, through ups and downs in her treatment, swimming has remained a constant for the 15-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>The latest installment was <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/local\/weve-got-your-back-hundreds-of-local-swimmers-come-out-for-afunraiser-swim-meet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a fundraising swim meet<\/a> for the Jefferson Forest High School (Va.) student held Friday. The Hill City Sprint &amp; Relay Invitational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/sports\/high_school\/swimmers-come-together-in-event-for-jf-s-cassidy-richardson\/article_0766b55c-d82b-5148-bc95-242500d9f76b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attracted more than 250 swimmers<\/a> from near Richardson\u2019s hometown of Forest, outside of Lynchburg, representing nearly a dozen high schools and clubs. Swimmers paid $5 each to compete at the Jamerson Family YMCA, and proceeds from the sale of baked goods, t-shirts and a raffle will benefit the Richardson family as they tackle the medical bills associated with Cassidy\u2019s treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s so special to me that everybody cares so much and that so many people are here to support me,\u201d Cassidy told WSET, the local ABC television affiliate. \u201cIt means a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richardson was diagnosed with the rare form of bone cancer that often presents in children <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/archive\/community-rallies-around-9-year-old-girl-fighting-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in 2013<\/a>. She\u2019s had to travel to John Hopkins\u2019 pediatric oncology unit in Baltimore for treatment, a trip that takes four hours each way. In addition to chemotherapy, she\u2019s undergone knee replacement and femur replacement surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>She was cancer-free for more than a year, allowing her to swim for the Jefferson Forest varsity team as a freshman, before tumors returned. Her latest battle included <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/local\/local-teen-battling-rare-bone-cancer-back-home-after-17-days-in-the-icu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the discovery of two tumors in October<\/a>, which led to 17 days at Hopkins\u2019 Pediatric ICU, spending the Thanksgiving holiday there and returning in early December.<\/p>\n<p>Friday&#8217;s meet was <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/local\/fundraiser-being-held-to-raise-money-for-local-teen-battling-rare-bone-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the latest fundraiser for the family<\/a>, which includes \u201cPink Outs\u201d in her honor and a \u201cPancakes with the Grinch\u201d event just before Christmas. It underscored how vital the swimming community has been to her fight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cOur community and swim community have been so wonderful in supporting Cassidy and her battle with osteosarcoma,\u201d Cassidy\u2019s mother, <strong>Kim Richardson,<\/strong> said in an email to <em>Swimming World<\/em>. \u201cThe only sport Cassidy has ever done is swimming.\u00a0 She\u2019s been swimming since she was five. It was very hard for her not to swim this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try to mostly focus on the positive things,\u201d Richardson told The News &amp; Advance, \u201cbecause I feel like if I were to focus on the negative that it would make me sad, and then I\u2019d just not want to do anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first swim fundraiser for Cassidy. The Hill City Swim &amp; Tennis Club, where she swims in the summer, did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsadvance.com\/news\/local\/swim-a-thon-raises-thousands-for--year-old-with\/article_f08aaee6-60b4-50b6-8887-444ff90b0142.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a swim-a-thon to raise money for her in 2016<\/a>. Friday&#8217;s event was organized by Jefferson Forest High coach <strong>Marty Ponder,<\/strong> Hill City coach <strong>Hank Reed<\/strong> and <strong>Greg Hoffman,<\/strong> the head coach at Heritage High.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We felt like, lets just bring the swimming community together again and show her that, we were on your team earlier but we still have your back and we&#8217;re going to be on your team now and support you no matter what,&#8221; said Hofmann, who presented the family with a check at the meet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cassidy Richardson was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2013 when she was nine years old.
