BELGRADE, August 27. THE USA men's cadet water polo team (15-under) fell to Yugoslavia today in the opener
\nof the YU Open International Tournament in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, 13-4. The tournament serves as the World Championship for the cadet level. This is the first time that the U.S. has sent a squad to participate in this event.<\/p>\n
Team USA played even with its hosts in the first half, trading goals to a 3-3 tie at the half. But Yugoslavia erupted for seven unanswered goals in the third quarter, much to the delight of the crowd in Belgrade. The Yugoslavians went on to score three more in the fourth quarter to USA's one, and finished with a 13-4 win. Yugoslavia outscored the U.S. cadets 10-1 in the second half.<\/p>\n
U.S. goalkeeper Chay Tatman had nine saves in three quarters of work, while teammate John Connolly picked up three in the fourth quarter. Will Hindle-Katel, Joe Sherrin, Eric Vreeland, and Steven Weinberg each scored a goal for the U.S. Weinberg's goal followed a blocked four-meter shot by Connolly in the fourth.<\/p>\n
"We played them even for the first half," said U.S. head coach Doug Peabody. "But they had a great run in the third quarter. They were led by a huge lefty that starts on their Junior National Team which just won the European Championship and we could not stop him. Our goalies actually played great."<\/p>\n
