Molly Kowa<\/strong>l secured the first win of the day for the Buckeye women, touching first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:53.95. Kowal was followed by first-place finishes by Hannah Bach in the 100 breast, Kathrin<\/strong> Demler<\/strong> in the 200 fly and Freya Rayner<\/strong> in the 50 free. Hannah Bach<\/strong> finished the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.01, just .01 seconds ahead of Hannah Gresser<\/strong>.<\/p>\nRayner became the first double winner on the day as she touched first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.30. Amy Fulmer<\/strong> trailed Rayner to finish second at 50.66. The Buckeyes and Wildcats kept a close margin through the second dive break as Demler added nine points to the Scarlet and Gray total with her second win of the day. She finished the 500 free with a time of 4:46.49, over seven seconds ahead of Kentucky\u2019s Ali Galyer<\/strong>. Katie Trace<\/strong> clinched her first win of the day in the 100 butterfly, beating out the Kentucky swimmer by .05 seconds. At the second break, the Buckeye women led the Wildcats 145-138.<\/p>\nDemler was 0.02 seconds away from her third, first-place finish of the day as she clocked a time of 1:58.08 in the 200 IM while Kentucky\u2019s Asia Seidt<\/strong> finished at 1:58.06. The Scarlet and Gray finished strong with a win in the 400 free relay as the team of Taylor Petrak<\/strong>, Fulmer, Trace and Rayner clocked a time of 3:19.13. Ohio State swimming got out to a winning start, finishing just 0.70 seconds ahead of the Kentucky 200 medley relay team. Jason Mathews<\/strong> picked up the next Buckeye win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.68 while Cameron Craig<\/strong> touched first in the 50 free to put the Scarlet and Gray behind the Kentucky men by a margin of eight at the first break.<\/p>\nMathews and Craig both won their second races of the day as Mathews touched first in the 200 breaststroke (1:58.48) and Craig finished ahead of Kentucky\u2019s Mason Wilby<\/strong> in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.39. Thomas Watkins placed first in the 200 backstroke to give the Buckeye men a 158.5-123.5 advantage at the second break.<\/p>\nBoth Buckeye 400 free relay teams closed out the meet with the win as Andrew Loy<\/strong>, Craig, Matthew<\/strong> Abeysinghe<\/strong> and Paul DeLakis<\/strong> touched ahead of Kentucky\u2019s relay team by 2.12 seconds. Both teams were shoulder to shoulder going into the last stretch but DeLakis pulled ahead to clinch the win and put the Buckeye men on top of the Wildcats, 175.5-142.5.<\/p>\nDIVING RESULTS<\/b><\/p>\n
3-Meter \u2013<\/b>\u00a0The Buckeyes topped the podium on the 3-meter springboard as freshman Lyle Yost<\/strong> finished first among the men with a score of 386.25 and freshman Mackenzie Crawford<\/strong> placed first among the women with 290.03 total points. Juniors Genevieve Angerame<\/strong> and Lexie Barker<\/strong> finished fifth and sixth with scores of 257.78 and 220.95, respectively while Jacob Fielding<\/strong> (366.83), Jacob Siler<\/strong> (340.28) and Joseph Canova<\/strong> (313.73) finished 3-4-5, respectively.<\/p>\n1-Meter<\/b> \u2013 Yost continued his perfect showing on the springboard, this time finishing with a score of 351.90 on the 1-meter. Jacob Fielding took second with 322.43 points while Joseph Canova (300.45) and Jacob Siler (269.55) rounded out the Top 5, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Mackenzie Crawford took second on the 1-meter but first among the Buckeye women with a score of 275.10, just 3.68 points behind the Kentucky diver. Jacqueline Brenn<\/strong> placed fourth with a score of 269.25.<\/p>\nPlatform<\/b> \u2013 Crawford finished ahead of the field on the platform with a score of 282.60, earning the Buckeye women nine points. She was followed by Leah Baker i<\/strong>n third (254.03) and Genevieve Angerame in fourth (227.48). The men swept the podium on the platform with Jacob Siler taking gold with a total of 329.70 points while Jacob Fielding (327.23) and Joseph Canova (327.00) finished second and third, respectively. The men\u2019s collective 16 points put the Buckeyes ahead of the Wildcats after the first break.<\/p>\nA look from Kentucky<\/strong><\/p>\nKentucky earned 14 first-place finishes in the 34-event meet. Seven were earned by the men’s team and seven were earned by the women’s team. Three freshman were responsible for five of Kentucky’s 14 gold performances, including Caitlin Brooks<\/strong> who won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, Clark who won the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events and Gillian Davey<\/strong>\u00a0 who won the 200-yard breaststroke.<\/p>\nBrooks was the third-highest scorer of the meet among all female competitors with 20 points overall, while Clark tied for the highest scorer of the meet among all male competitors with 18 points.<\/p>\n
The women’s team set the pace early on in its first dual meet of 2020, winning the first event of the meet. The 200-yard medley relay team, which included Brooks, junior Bailey Bonnett<\/strong> <\/dfn> and sophomores Izzy Gati<\/strong> and Riley Gaines<\/strong><\/dfn>, took the top prize in the opening event with a time stamp of 1:39.50.<\/p>\nThe Kentucky women’s team would go on to collect six more first-place finishes in the dual meet. In the women’s 200-yard freestyle, senior Ali Galyer<\/strong><\/dfn> defeated the field in 1:48.47. Less than two seconds behind Galyer was Gaines who took second place in the event in 1:50.00.<\/p>\nThat wasn’t the only 1-2 sweep the women’s team would claim at the dual meet, as a pair of undergraduates would take their honors in the women’s 100-yard backstroke event. Brooks, a two-time Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week honoree for her performances in the 100-yard backstroke this season, earned gold in the event with a time of 52.91. Sophomore Sophie Sorenson<\/strong><\/dfn> trailed behind Brooks, earning second place in 55.47.<\/p>\nBrooks, a native of Gainesville, Florida, has achieved a podium finish in the women’s 100-yard backstroke at all six of her meets this season. She has claimed first place three of her six performances in the event.<\/p>\n
The freshman also led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the women’s 200-yard backstroke. Brooks placed first in 1:55.74, followed by Sorenson in 1:58.25, then freshman Lauren Poole<\/strong><\/dfn> in 1:59.69, and senior Alex Nelson<\/strong> <\/dfn> took fourth place in 2:02.37.<\/p>\nThe UK women’s team didn’t let off the gas when they followed up the four-person sweep in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1-2 sweep in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke. Led once again by a freshman, newcomer Davey took first place in the event with a 2:13.53 time stamp. Bonnett trailed behind Davey, earning second place in 2:14.27.<\/p>\n
Senior Asia Seidt<\/dfn><\/strong> won the final individual race of the dual meet, swimming the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.06.<\/p>\nSophomore Kyndal Knight<\/strong> <\/dfn> recorded a season high on platform, earning a 268.50. The mark qualifies her for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, an opportunity to earn a ticket to the 2020 NCAA Championships. Her score of 268.50 is just 10 points off her career high of 278.00, which ranks eighth in Kentucky’s all-time platform performances.<\/p>\nKnight won the 1-meter springboard competition Friday evening, defeating the nine-person field with a score of 278.78. It marked her fourth victory on the discipline this season.<\/p>\n
The men’s team had its share of gold-worthy performances throughout the morning, winning four of the five freestyle events at the dual meet. Led by freshman Jakob Clark<\/strong><\/dfn>, the distance freestyler took first place in the men’s 500-yard freestyle in 4:30.26 and the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:13.60.<\/p>\nThe UK men added two more freestyle event wins to its record as senior Peter Wetzlar<\/strong> <\/dfn>grabbed a gold honor in the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 43.80 and senior Jason Head<\/strong> collected first place in the men’s 200-yard freestyle in 1:37.86.<\/p>\nSenior Alex Taylor<\/strong> <\/dfn> rocked the men’s backstroke events. He collected a first-place finish in the men’s 100-yard backstroke in 49.07 and second place in the men’s 200-yard backstroke in 1:46.99, a season best. Sophomore Mason Wilby<\/strong> collected a gold finish in the men’s 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:47.56. Behind him, junior Daniel Orcutt<\/strong> earned second place in 1:48.93.<\/p>\nIn the final individual race of the meet, senior Glen Brown<\/a><\/dfn> led a 1-2 sweep in the 200-yard individual medley.
