{"id":409591,"date":"2020-01-03T18:27:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T01:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=409591"},"modified":"2020-01-03T18:27:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T01:27:27","slug":"northwestern-swimming-and-diving-splits-with-arizona-federico-burdisso-makes-northwestern-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/northwestern-swimming-and-diving-splits-with-arizona-federico-burdisso-makes-northwestern-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"Northwestern Swimming and Diving Splits with Arizona; Federico Burdisso Makes Northwestern Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northwestern swimming and diving split their opening weekend of 2020 with the women dominating Arizona 238-109 and Northern Arizona 255-86 while the men fell just short to Arizona, 199-154.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Scores:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men:\n<ul>\n<li>Arizona 199, Northwestern 154<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Women:\n<ul>\n<li>Northwestern 238, Arizona 109<\/li>\n<li>Arizona 226, Northern Arizona 120<\/li>\n<li>Northwestern 255, Northern Arizona 86<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2020-northwestern-vs-arizona-ncaa-college-2020-01-03.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RESULTS<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Northwestern Swimming and Diving Press Release<\/h3>\n<p>The Wildcats kicked off the meet sweeping both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s 400 medley relays.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s team of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/calypso-sheridan-has-name-speed-to-remember\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Calypso Sheridan<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Hannah Brunzell<\/strong>, <strong>Miriam Guevara<\/strong> and <strong>Malorie Han<\/strong> touched in a time of 3:40.75, followed closely by a second NU team of <strong>Nicole Aarts<\/strong>, <strong>Sophie Angus<\/strong>, <strong>Krystal Lara<\/strong> and <strong>Maddie Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, the team of sophomore <strong>Manu Bacarizo<\/strong> and first-years <strong>Kevin Houseman<\/strong>, <strong>Federico Burdisso<\/strong> and <strong>Aleksa Bobar<\/strong> out-touched their competition by almost three seconds in a time of 3:15.72.<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of competition, the &#8216;Cats took home nine individual event wins including <strong>Ilketra Lebl<\/strong> (1650 free), Brunzell (100 breast), Sheridan (100 Back, 200 IM), Bacarizo (100 Back), Houseman (100 Breast), Guevara (200 Fly) and <strong>Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson<\/strong> (1 Meter Dive).<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats started off day two just as strong, with the women&#8217;s 200 medley relay team of Sheridan, Angus, Guevara and Smith besting their competition by almost two seconds in a time of 1:40.25.<\/p>\n<p>In his collegiate opener for Northwestern swimming and diving, first-year <a href=\"https:\/\/nusports.com\/sports\/mens-swimming-and-diving\/roster\/federico-burdisso\/8787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federico Burdisso<\/a> finished just over a second ahead of his competition in the 100 fly to lead the &#8216;Cats sweep of the event, with Guevara winning the women&#8217;s by over two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Northwestern swimming and diving had their second and third sweeps of the day in the 200 breast and 200 back, with first-year <strong>Marcus Mok<\/strong> and Sheridan leading the way for the &#8216;Cats in the breast and first-year <strong>Emma Lepisova<\/strong> and Bacarizo sweeping the 200 back.<\/p>\n<p>First-year <strong>Markie Hopkins<\/strong> also swept the diving boards taking both the 1M and 3M to bring the &#8216;Cats individual win total of the weekend to 17.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats will be back in the pool tomorrow afternoon as they take on Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.<\/p>\n<h3>Arizona Press Release<\/h3>\n<p>Arizona wrapped up day 2 of its two-day meet to open 2020, finishing with a 2-1 record in the event. The men defeated Northwestern 199-154 while the women split their two dual meets, defeating NAU 226-120 and falling to Northwestern swimming and diving 238-109.<\/p>\n<p>The eighth-ranked men improved to 5-0 in dual meets this season while the 22nd-ranked women are now 3-4 this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brooks Fail<\/strong> continued his dominance from Thursday, winning two more events, the 500 free and the 400 IM and helped the men win the 400 free relay. <strong>Marin Ercegovic<\/strong>, <strong>Jorge Iga<\/strong>, <strong>Bjorn Markentin<\/strong> and <strong>Kirsten Jacobsen<\/strong> also posted victories on Friday while <strong>Hannah Cox<\/strong> posted her second and third runner-up finishes of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats are back in action on Jan. 24 and 25 when they travel to Cal and Stanford, respectively.
