THE momentum established yesterday, when US swimmers won four of five finals at the pan Pacific Championships, continued in prelims this morning as Americans qualified first in three of the five events contested.

Lindsay Benko qualified first in the women's 200m freestyle in 2:00.72, just three-hundredths ahewad of Japanese ace, Tomoko Hagiwara. Diana Munz, who has already won the 400 and 1500, was fourth in 2:01.11. Aussies Elka Graham (third in 2:01.04) and Giann Rooney (seventh in 2:01.60) are the likeliest challengers to Benko and Hagiwara.

Olympic champion Tom Malchow took the #1 spot in the men's 200m butterfly, qualifying in 1:57.09. Japanese champion Takashi Yamamoto was second in 1:57.58, while 17 year-old phenom, Michael Phelps, the world record-holder and world champion, was fourth in an easy 1:59.15. The two toughest Australians, Justin Norris and Heath Ramsay qualified a leisurely eleventh (2:01.24) and twelfth (2:02.01), respectively.

Emily Mason was the third American to qualify first today, leading the field in the women's 200m fly in 2:10.37. Triple world champion Petria Thomas was second in 2:10.86, with US national champion Mary Descenza fourth in 2:11.25, right behind Canada's Jennifer Button (2:11.05). The USA's Dana Kirk was eighth in 2;12.68. Japan has three swimmers in the top 10: Yurie Yano (fifth in 2:12.22), Yuko Nakanishi (seventh in 2:12.55) and, the biggest threat, Maki Mita (tenth in 2:13.42).

Not everything went the way of the Red, White and Blue.
Alice Mills, Australia's sixteen year-old sprint sensation, qualified first in the women's 50m free on a national record 25.39. Jenny Thompson, who made her first US national team when Mills was still in diapers, was second in 25.49. The USA's Tammie Stone was third in 25.57, followed by Aussie Jodie Henry in 25.69. US national champ, Haley Cope was fifth (25.82) with Aussie Sarah Ryan sixth (25.87). Two other Aussies and one Yank made it into the top 13.

Pre-meet favorite Kosuke Kitajima of Japan did not swim the 200m breaststroke, leaving it to his teammate, Daisuke Kimura to qualify first. His 2:12.92 was more than a second-and-a-half faster than #2 qualifier, Tom Wilkens (2:14.48). World champion Brendan Hansen of the USA was third (2:15.68), followed by Canada's Mike Brown (2:15.95). Australia's Jim Piper, who swam a 2:10.8 earlier this year was sixth (2:16.82), while the USA's Mark Gangloff was seventh (2:16.88). Two other Americans made top 16: Dave Denniston (ninth, 2:17.20) and Kevin Clements (eleventh, 2:17.55).

PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Yokohama, Japan
August 24-29

DAY THREE: August 26, 2002
Prelims Results

Event 32 200m Freetyle Women Heats

Ranking Results

WR 1:56.64 Franziska VAN ALMSICK GER 2002/08/03 BERLIN
GR 1:57.48 Claudia POLL CRC 1997/08/10 FUKUOKA

Rank HT LN Name first name Nation YB Time (R.T.)

——————————————————————————–

1 4 4 Lindsay BENKO USA 76 2:00.72 (0.77)
2 4 5 Tomoko HAGIWARA JPN 80 2:00.75 (0.77)
3 2 4 Elka GRAHAM AUS 81 2:01.04 (0.83)
4 4 3 Diana MUNZ USA 82 2:01.11 (0.78)
5 2 2 Alison FITCH NZL 80 2:01.35 (0.86)
6 1 5 Mariana NERY BROCHADO BRA 84 2:01.45 (0.83)
7 3 5 Giaan ROONEY AUS 82 2:01.60 (0.78)
8 4 8 Monique ANDRADE FERREIRA BRA 80 2:01.70 (0.79)
9 3 4 Jiaying PANG CHN 85 2:01.84 (0.82)
10 3 3 Tomoko NAGAI JPN 81 2:02.09 (0.72)
10 3 6 Norie URABE JPN 86 2:02.09 (0.71)
12 2 3 Jessica DEGLAU CAN 80 2:02.37 (0.82)
13 3 2 Mary HILL USA 85 2:02.42 (0.82)
14 4 7 Heidi CRAWFORD AUS 82 2:02.46 (0.83)
15 2 6 Sachiko YAMADA JPN 82 2:02.60 (0.85)
16 3 1 Elizabeth COLLINS CAN 82 2:02.63 (0.82)
17 4 6 Rhiannon JEFFREY USA 86 2:02.71 (0.73)
18 2 8 Ai SHIBATA JPN 82 2:03.34 (0.87)
19 4 2 Rebecca CREEDY AUS 83 2:03.63 (0.69)
20 1 3 Denise OLIVEIRA BRA 80 2:04.78 (0.86)
21 2 1 Kelly DOODY CAN 79 2:04.99 (0.83)
22 3 7 Helen NORFOLK NZL 81 2:05.19 (0.87)
23 2 7 Madoka OCHI JPN 85 2:05.73 (0.84)
24 3 8 Sarah JACKSON NZL 80 2:06.08 (0.84)
25 1 6 Melanie BOUCHARD CAN 82 2:06.51 (0.82)
26 1 4 Rebecca LINTON NZL 85 2:07.32 (0.93)
27 1 2 Melissa INGRAM NZL 85 2:09.56 (1.00)
28 1 1 Wei Min TEO SIN 86 2:12.14 (0.80)
1 7 Nathalie BERNARD NZL 85 DNS (—–)
2 5 Petria THOMAS AUS 75 DNS (—–)
4 1 Laura NICHOLLS CAN 78 DNS (—–)

Event 33 200m Butterfly Men Heats

Ranking Results

WR 1:54.58 Michael PHELPS USA 2001/07/24 FUKUOKA
GR 1:55.41 Tom MALCHOW USA 1999/08/25 SYDNEY

Rank HT LN Name first name Nation YB Time (R.T.)

——————————————————————————–

1 2 4 Thomas MALCHOW USA 76 1:57.09 (0.82)
2 1 4 Takashi YAMAMOTO JPN 78 1:57.58 (0.77)
3 2 3 Yu KONDO JPN 81 1:59.01 (0.63)
4 3 4 Michael PHELPS USA 85 1:59.15 (0.76)
5 1 5 Takeshi MATSUDA JPN 84 1:59.27 (0.80)
6 1 6 Juan Pablo VALDIVIESO PER 81 2:00.53 (0.72)
7 3 6 Kohei KAWAMOTO JPN 79 2:00.61 (0.68)
8 1 3 Eric DONNELLY USA 80 2:00.75 (0.77)
8 3 7 Pedro BARBOSA R.
