{"id":407623,"date":"2019-12-18T14:27:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T21:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=407623"},"modified":"2019-12-18T14:27:19","modified_gmt":"2019-12-18T21:27:19","slug":"iowa-swimming-diving-sweeps-big-ten-womens-honors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/iowa-swimming-diving-sweeps-big-ten-womens-honors\/","title":{"rendered":"Iowa Swimming, Diving Sweeps Big Ten Women&#8217;s Honors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Iowa swimming and diving team swept the Big Ten Conference women&#8217;s weekly honors, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.\u00a0 <strong>Kelsey Drake<\/strong>\u00a0 was named the Swimmer of the Week,<strong> Jayah Mathews <\/strong><dfn><\/dfn> the Diver of the Week, and <strong>Millie Sansome<\/strong> the Freshman of the Week.<\/p>\n<p>The sweep came on the heels of the Hawkeyes&#8217; 179-121 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series victory over Iowa State on Dec. 13. \u00a0It was Iowa&#8217;s 10th straight win over the Cyclones and the victory clinched a Hawkeye win in the annual series between the two schools.<\/p>\n<p>Drake, a junior from Marion Iowa, earned her second career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor (third Big Ten honor of her career) after setting a school and Beyer Pool record in the 200 fly for Iowa swimming.\u00a0 She won the event by more than five seconds over the field in an NCAA &#8220;B&#8221; qualifying time of 1:57.87.\u00a0 Drake completed her sweep of the butterfly events with a time of 54.06 in the 100 fly and she captured her third individual title in the 200 IM in 2:02.78.<\/p>\n<p>Mathews, a junior from Sydney, Australia, earned her third Big Ten Diver of the Week honor this season after sweeping the springboard events in the dual.\u00a0 She posted a pool record off the 3-meter with a 348.40 before posting her second win off the 1-meter with a score of 318.40.\u00a0 \u00a0She posted NCAA Zone Diving standards in both events.\u00a0 It is the eighth career honor for Mathews (seven Diver of the Week, one Freshman of the Week).<\/p>\n<p>Sansome garnered her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor this season after posting two first-place and two runner-up finishes against the Cyclones.\u00a0 The Marlow, England, native won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:03.34 and 200 back in 1:58.08.\u00a0 She placed second in the 200 IM (behind Drake) in 2:04.92 and was a member of the second-place 200-medley relay (1:41.81).<\/p>\n<p>During the 2019-20 season, Iowa swimming has garnered 10 Big Ten Conference weekly honors this season &#8212; seven women&#8217;s and three men&#8217;s honors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/big-ten-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MORE BIG TEN COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Iowa athletics<\/i><i>.
