Both teams are eager to grasp gold in this new tournament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re competitive guys, we would take [a winning] attitude in any place,\u201d said CMS attacker <strong>Christian Thronton<\/strong>, who led his team to a 14-11 semifinal win over Johns Hopkins with three goals. \u201cThe fact that it\u2019s in the national championship\u2026 it doesn\u2019t mean anything to me. Photo Courtesy: Tony Leon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The brash junior on Head Coach <strong>Greg Lonzo\u2019s<\/strong> squad added that it\u2019s all about the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun to play for trophies and titles but, ultimately, we love this sport and we love winning. One more title is just a bonus,\u201d Thornton added.<\/p>\n<p>His coach was decidedly more measured \u2014 and analytical \u2014 but conceded the same point: the Stags are looking to knock off the Poets in their pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into that game against Whittier, we\u2019re ultra-competitive,\u201d Lonzo, now in his 13th year at Claremont, said after the win over the Blue Jays. \u201c[Whittier\u2019s] a team we think\u2019s going to be good for a long time \u2014 and we plan on being good for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There will be no secrets Sunday because the teams have faced each other three times this season, including the 2019 SCIAC Championship, won 13-12 by the Poets at home. Breaking down what might be decisive, Lonzo explained that it will be which team enjoys \u2014 or prevents \u2014 a scoring streak.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/first-ever-diii-collegiate-national-mens-water-polo-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>First-Ever DIII Collegiate National Men\u2019s Water Polo Championship Opens Saturday at Whittier<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be critical tomorrow [that], if we\u2019re going to get that big run in the game, it\u2019s going to be built off of playing great defense and creating opportunities,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s getting them on their heels, getting them into a zone defense, where they\u2019re not really comfortable, and trying to get the tempo into one we like [and] that fits our structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lonzo added that the Stags\u2019 success comes from an opportunistic defense. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna play great defense and then exploit opportunities on the offensive side,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Which presents a compelling contrast to an offensively-driven Whittier attack.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>There&#8217;s good reason to Fear the Poet<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In two short years, <strong>Dave Kasa<\/strong>, head coach at Whittier\u00a0 has built a deep and dangerous team, using decades-long connection to the rich California community college talent reservoir to quickly turn his men&#8217;s team into a contender. Photo Courtesy: Tony Leon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A key addition to the 2019 squad was <strong>Domick Nevarez<\/strong>, who transferred from Cal Baptist. The result was a 2019 SCIAC Athlete of the Year award for the Norwalk, California native. And great chemistry with his new teammates, who quickly voted him one of the team captains.<\/p>\n<p>Kasa pointed out that Nevarez inspired his teammates with his knowledge, passion and ability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By the end of [training] camp I would say Dom was the leader; his age, his experience, he&#8217;s a great teammate. But we nominated two leaders,&#8221; Kasa said about team&#8217;s leadership, which includes junior co-captain <strong>Hans Zdolsek<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A leader by example is Kamai, who transferred this year from Golden Valley West Community College.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Micah happened to be one of the leaders who&#8217;s also a brand-new guy,&#8221; Kasa said. &#8220;But, he has been a captain and a leader before. He&#8217;s won championships before. Quite honestly, I brought him in because he&#8217;s a good center, but I also rought him in because he is a winner, a great student athlete and he is a leader.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Poets have beaten CMS twice in three meetings, including two weeks ago when Whittier took the SCIAC title. Randazzo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the Poets won 12-8 over MIT\u2014and before the Stags had finished up against Hopkins \u2014 he spoke about his team\u2019s primary rival this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve played CMS three times.
