Evans broke the world record at the 1987 US Open and it has stood all these years and will most likely go down tonight since Ledecky did not take a hard stroke in the heats, touching first at 4:05.50.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky is ahead of her side kick\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith<\/strong>, who always seems to draw lane 5 next to Ledecky&#8217;s lane 4 each time they swim. Smith is second at 4:08.77 ahead of World University Games gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Kaersten Meitz\u00a0<\/strong>at 4:10.67.<\/p>\n<p>Australian\u00a0<strong>Kiah Melverton\u00a0<\/strong>is seeded fourth at 4:10.89 while 2012 Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Allison Schmitt\u00a0<\/strong>is still going strong at 4:11.12.<\/p>\n<p>NCAA runner-up\u00a0<strong>Paige Madden\u00a0<\/strong>is sixth at 4:11.66 ahead of open water Olympians\u00a0<strong>Haley Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.06) and\u00a0<strong>Ashely Twichell\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.09).<\/p>\n<p>Notable A-Final misses came from\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(4:13.38, 12th) and\u00a0<strong>Ally McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>(4:14.27, 13th).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>4:05.50,\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:08.77,\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:10.67,\u00a0<strong>Kaersten Meitz<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:10.89,\u00a0<strong>Kiah Melverton<\/strong>, AUS<\/li>\n<li>4:11.12,\u00a0<strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:11.66,\u00a0<strong>Paige Madden<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:12.06,\u00a0<strong>Haley Anderson<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>4:12.09,\u00a0<strong>Ashley Twichell<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 Free<\/h3>\n<p><em>Meet Record: 3:45.63, Zane Grothe, 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Team Santa Monica&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ziyang Zhang\u00a0<\/strong>out of China rose to the top seed in the men&#8217;s 400 free at 3:48.76 as he was the only one among the top eight to swim quicker than his seed time of 3:51. Zhang, just 18, also had a good swim in the 800 out of the third heat to move into the top 8 as he broke 8:00 for the first time. Zhang is seeded ahead of Worlds finalist\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>(3:49.10), who cruised to the second seed, and last night&#8217;s 800 champ\u00a0<strong>Guilherme da Costa\u00a0<\/strong>(3:50.85).<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 400 free final has an international feel to it with four non-Americans advancing to the final in Zhang, da Costa,\u00a0<strong>Fernando Scheffer\u00a0<\/strong>(3:51.36) and\u00a0<strong>Marwan El Kamash\u00a0<\/strong>(3:52.79). Scheffer and da Costa are in Atlanta from Brazil while Kamash is Egyptian but training in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 400 free field in the United States has been fairly meek since the retirement of\u00a0<strong>Connor Jaeger\u00a0<\/strong>in 2016 as Grothe has taken the reigns as the top distance swimmer but has not medaled internationally in the last three years. The second spot in particular is wide open as Florida sophomore\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith\u00a0<\/strong>has emerged as a freestyle talent this year. He is seeded fifth for the final at 3:51.44.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Wieser\u00a0<\/strong>(3:51.86) and\u00a0<strong>Jordan Wilimovsky\u00a0<\/strong>(3:51.99) also advanced to the final as those two are primarily longer distance swimmers, in particular Wilimovsky who has already qualified for the Olympic Games in the 10K open water.<\/p>\n<p>Notable names that missed the A-Final were\u00a0<strong>Bobby Finke\u00a0<\/strong>(3:53.79, 12th), <strong>Luca Urlando\u00a0<\/strong>(3:53.88, 14th)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>(3:54.86, 20th).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>3:48.76,\u00a0<strong>Ziyang Zhang<\/strong>, CHN<\/li>\n<li>3:49.10,\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>3:50.85,\u00a0<strong>Guilherme da Costa<\/strong>, BRA<\/li>\n<li>3:51.36,\u00a0<strong>Fernando Scheffer<\/strong>, BRA<\/li>\n<li>3:51.44,\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>3:51.86,\u00a0<strong>Chris Wieser<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>3:51.99,\u00a0<strong>Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>3:52.79,\u00a0<strong>Marwan El Kamash<\/strong>, EGY<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p><em>Meet Record: 2:11.06, Justine Mueller, 2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ledecky couldn&#8217;t break the US Open meet record in the 400 but\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>was able to get under the meet record in the 200 IM with a 2:10.71 as she lowered the meet record of 2:11.06 from 2013 set by former Michigan standout\u00a0<strong>Justine Mueller<\/strong>. Margalis was going to have a duel with\u00a0<strong>Madisyn Cox<\/strong>, who was a 2:11.0 in the heats, also under the meet record, but was disqualified.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves a noticeable hole in tonight&#8217;s final as Margalis and Cox were expected to push each other to go sub-2:10. Margalis will have to do that alone now. However, she should have a good race with high schoolers\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.97) and\u00a0<strong>Torri Huske\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.50) surrounding her.<\/p>\n<p>SCY American record holder\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.64) also advanced to the final in sixth place as South Carolina grad <strong>Emma Barksdale\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.50) had a solid swim for third.<\/p>\n<p>There were a few big names that missed the A-Final with <strong>Bethany Galat\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.70, 10th),\u00a0<strong>Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.23, 15th) and\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.62, 18th)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>2:10.71,\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong>, USA, MR<\/li>\n<li>2:11.97,\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:12.50,\u00a0<strong>Emma Barksdale<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:13.50,\u00a0<strong>Torri Huske<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:13.62,\u00a0<strong>Kathrin Demler<\/strong>, GER<\/li>\n<li>2:13.64,\u00a0<strong>Ella Eastin<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:13.77,\u00a0<strong>Justina Kozan<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:14.16,\u00a0<strong>Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo<\/strong>, MEX<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p><em>Meet Record: 1:59.24, Ryan Lochte, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>18-year-old\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>put the rest of the nation on notice with a solid heats swim of 1:58.38 in the men&#8217;s 200 IM on Thursday morning at the 2019 US Open in Atlanta. That was a new meet record for Foster as he took down <strong>Ryan Lochte&#8217;s <\/strong>1:59.24 from 2017. Foster actually swam a new personal best with that 1:58.3 as he was a 1:58.4 at World Juniors in winning the gold medal there. He finished ahead of reigning Worlds bronze medalist <strong>Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.35), who many believe is a lock to make both the 200 and 400 IM at next year&#8217;s Olympic Trials. Foster is looking more and more dangerous as we inch closer to Omaha as he looks to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-sydney-six-they-were-young-they-were-talented-they-defined-an-era\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first male high schooler to make the US Olympic team since 2000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kalisz should have more in the tank tonight as this stacked A-Final should be much quicker tonight.\u00a0<strong>Sam Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>broke 2:00 for third at 1:59.49.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming in his home Georgia Tech pool,\u00a0<strong>Caio Pumputis\u00a0<\/strong>put up the fourth seed at 2:00.09 ahead of world record holder\u00a0<strong>Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.35) and 19-year-old <strong>Kieran Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.79).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>put up a 2:00.14 in the later flighted heats to bump out\u00a0<strong>John Shebat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There were a couple big names that missed the A-Final in\u00a0<strong>John Shebat\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.28, 9th),\u00a0<strong>Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.36, 10th),\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.03, 14th) and\u00a0<strong>Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.23, 16th)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>1:58.38,\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster<\/strong>, USA, MR<\/li>\n<li>1:59.35,\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>1:59.49,\u00a0<strong>Sam Stewart<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:00.09,\u00a0<strong>Caio Pumputis<\/strong>, BRA<\/li>\n<li>2:00.14,\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley<\/strong>, USA (swam in flighted heats)<\/li>\n<li>2:00.35,\u00a0<strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:00.79,\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>2:01.00,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Sos<\/strong>, HUN<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Women&#8217;s 50 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Meet Record: 24.90, Jessica Hardy, 2009<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>made it look easy in the 50 free heats as she swam a 24.65 to lead just one other swimmer under 25. That was\u00a0<strong>Erika Brown<\/strong>, who swam a 24.99 just two weeks after she swam a 21.19 in SCY at the Tennessee Invite.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel was under the US Open meet record that was a 24.90 set by\u00a0<strong>Jessica Hardy\u00a0<\/strong>in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama pro\u00a0<strong>Margo Geer\u00a0<\/strong>is third at 25.03 ahead of high school junior\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>(25.18), who is the top uncommitted swimmer currently.<\/p>\n<p>There were some notable A-Final misses with\u00a0<strong>Farida Osman\u00a0<\/strong>(25.40, 10th),\u00a0<strong>Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>(25.52, 12th),\u00a0<strong>Madison Kennedy\u00a0<\/strong>(25.62, 17th) and\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(25.80, 23rd).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>24.65,\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>, USA, MR<\/li>\n<li>24.99,\u00a0<strong>Erika Brown<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>25.03,\u00a0<strong>Margo Geer<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>25.18,\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>25.25,\u00a0<strong>Catie DeLoof<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>25.27,\u00a0<strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>, HKG<\/li>\n<li>25.29,\u00a0<strong>Casey Fanz<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<li>25.30,\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong>, USA<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Free<\/h3>\n<p><em>Meet Record: 21.70, Brad Tandy, 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>World Championships silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Bruno Fratus\u00a0<\/strong>put up the top heat time in the 50 free at the 2019 US Open as he swam a 21.59 for another sub-22 performance. That was a new meet record for the Brazilian who trains in south Florida as he lowered <strong>Brad Tandy&#8217;s <\/strong>2017 mark of 21.70. The 30-year-old Fratus has shown no signs of aging as he continues to be one of the top sprinters in the world.
