Who would come up first? What kind of advantage would be created? How much late-race damage would the strategy inflict?<\/p>\n<p>It was in South Korea where Japan\u2019s Daichi Suzuki, in a battle with American David Berkoff and the Soviet Union\u2019s Igor Polianski, raced to the gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke while submerged for nearly half of the race, including the opening 30 meters.<\/p>\n<p>With the Olympic Games returning to Japan for the first time since 1964, and since Suzuki plays a key role in Japanese sports, it seems like an appropriate time for our Takeoff to Tokyo series to take a stroll through history.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the moment seems right to revisit the defining performance of Suzuki\u2019s career, and an era in which the backstroke discipline went rogue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>To read
