Rebecca Soni\u00a0<\/strong>is an American breaststroke specialist who is a six-time Olympic medalist. She is a former world record holder in the 100m breaststroke (short and long course) and the 200m breaststroke (short and long course). Soni<\/a> was the first woman to swim the 200m breaststroke in under 2 minutes and 20 seconds.<\/p>\n

Soni\u00a0has won a total of 22 medals in major international competition. 14 gold, seven silver, and one bronze spanning the Olympic, World<\/a>, Universiade, and the Pan Pacific Championships.<\/p>\n

She burst onto the international scene at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games where she won three medals, two silvers and a gold. During those Games, she set the world record in the 200 breast<\/a>, shocking Australian favorite Leisel Jones<\/strong>. \u00a0Four years later at the 2012 Olympics,\u00a0Soni\u00a0successfully defended her Olympic title in the 200m, again in world record time, becoming the first woman to do so in the breaststroke event.<\/p>\n

She was named Swimming World’s\u00a0<\/em>\u201cWorld Swimmer of the Year\u201d in 2010 and 2011, and the \u201cAmerican Swimmer of the Year\u201d in 2009, 2010 and 2011.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
