﻿{"id":403934,"date":"2019-11-25T17:41:41","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T00:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=403934"},"modified":"2019-11-25T17:49:53","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T00:49:53","slug":"the-week-that-was-energy-standard-london-roar-punch-vegas-tickets-ncaa-invites-heat-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-week-that-was-energy-standard-london-roar-punch-vegas-tickets-ncaa-invites-heat-up\/","title":{"rendered":"The Week That Was: Energy Standard, London Roar Punch Vegas Tickets; NCAA Invites Heat Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Week That Was sponsored by SuitMate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There was a lot of big news this past week in the world of swimming as the last two teams punched their tickets to the International Swimming League final, November Invites picked up in full force, and Tokyo 2020 organizers revealed the aquatic center to visiting journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Standard and London Roar advanced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/isl.global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISL<\/a> grand final next month in Las Vegas as Energy Standard is the only team yet to lose a match in the new league, defeating their European rival in their &#8220;home pool&#8221; in London, the home of the 2012 Olympics where swimmers\u00a0<strong>Florent Manaudou<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>returned.<\/p>\n<p>Across the pond in the United States, the NCAA&#8217;s November Invitationals started over the weekend as nearly every major top 25 team competed outside of Cal, Texas, Michigan, etc. The national rankings really shook up over the weekend as the athletes will now go home to enjoy some time with family for Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>The Sun Yang v. WADA case continued to stir the pot as the Doping Control Assistant who was tasked with witnessing the Olympic champion produce a urine sample in September last year (which ultimately did not get collected), was reported by state media in China as having changed his story. The question that follows is clear: which version of events from the DCA and others is a lie?<\/p>\n<p>His signature is on an agency\u00a0<strong>Statement of Confidentiality (SoC)<\/strong>\u00a0confirming his appointment, the training he had received from the DCO and agreeing to standard confidentiality provisions. They have also called on\u00a0<strong>FINA<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)<\/strong>\u00a0to \u201cget tougher\u201d on doping.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>, the Olympic and World champions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-lifts-league-mpv-in-emotional-return-to-haunt-that-made-him-dad-household-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who raced to the helm of the MPV leaderboard \u00a0in London at the weekend<\/a>, also urged FINA to embrace the International Olympic Committee\u2019s latest swing by staging podium ceremonies for those denied the moment of celebration by those who subsequently proven to have cheated.<\/p>\n<p>Both swimmers believe that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wada-tampering-is-the-hammer-that-cracks-sun-yangs-playbook-finas-grammar-gymnastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, awaiting the judgement of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)<\/a> over an acrimonious encounter with testers last year, should be banned for life for \u201cunacceptable\u201d behavior. Tokyo 2020 venue official Daishuu Tone told reporters in Tokyo:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are aiming to construct a swimming venue to the world\u2019s highest standards equipped with the latest facilities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The main pool features a movable wall allowing the 50m facility to be converted into two 25m pools. Sophomore\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shaine-casas-goes-138-in-200-back-katie-drabot-blasts-153-200-fly-in-art-adamson-finale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shaine Casas<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of Texas A&amp;M was one of the top performers of the weekend, swimming a 1:40 in the 200 IM, 44.4 in the 100 back, and 1:38 in the 200 back as he is leading the nation in all three events. This was a huge weekend for Casas, who did not finish higher than 11th at NCAAs as a freshman last season.<\/p>\n<p>Arkansas senior\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anna-hopkin-blasts-21-19-in-50-free-at-missouri-invite-tigers-swim-5-ncaa-leading-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anna Hopkin<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>out of the United Kingdom was also swimming well this weekend with a 21.19 in the 50 free, moving herself up to fourth all-time in the event and just shy of\u00a0<strong>Abbey Weitzeil&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>21.02 record. Hopkin also won the 100 free at the Missouri Invitational with a 46.56 as she tied her own best time and remained sixth all-time. Hopkin has been on a roll this year after having a breakout summer where she made the final of the 50 free at the World Championships this summer for the British team. Hopkin has a chance to become Arkansas&#8217; first national champion in swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee senior\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/erika-brown-strikes-again-with-49-79-in-100-fly-at-tennessee-invitational\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erika Brown<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>matched Hopkin&#8217;s efforts in the 50 free, touching at the Tennessee Invite with a 21.19, just off her own best time of 21.15 which she swam at last year&#8217;s SECs and put her second all-time. Brown then swam a 46.15 in the 100 free to move up to second all-time in that event as she nearly became the second woman to break 46 in the 100 free after\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>did it in 2017. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sjostrom-le-clos-drive-energy-standard-to-tight-win-over-london-roar-both-teams-go-to-vegas-showdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Craig Lord, Swimming World Editor-in-Chief<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy Standard\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0London Roar<\/strong>\u00a0are the Europe-based teams heading for the Final Match of the first season of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/international-swimming-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Swimming League<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Energy emerged the derby Match winner in London 467.5 to 458.5 points, courtesy of the decisive triple-points skins events beyond a thrilling contest of close calls.<\/p>\n<p>The top two Europe-based teams, both with British head coaches,<strong>\u00a0James Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0for Energy and\u00a0<strong>Mel Marshall<\/strong>\u00a0for Roar, will battle with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-american-derby-the-battle-to-roll-dice-in-las-vegas-heats-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<strong>LA Current and Cali Condors<\/strong><\/a>, the top two United States-based teams, at the showdown Final Match of the League\u2019s first season in Las Vegas on December 20-21. Said Gibson:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe knew it would always be like that. London are such a great team and they\u2019re going to add a lot more strength and depth to their field for Vegas. But, we were confident in our strategy, I didn\u2019t change my tactics once, and we\u2019ve got a great team.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Most Valuable Player award went to <strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong>\u00a0on 44.5 points, his Energy teammate\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, also captain, finished runner-up just half a point adrift.
