THE first National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Junior National Long Course Swimming Championships got underway tonight in Boca Raton.

The meet, which runs through Friday, August 9, has attracted some 280 of the nation's top 18 and under swimmers. The short course meet, held last March in Long Beach, Calif., attracted 300 swimmers.

Only four events were contested tonight, all of them distance races.

Thirteen year-old Emilie Gratton, AFOX, hung on the hip of 14 year-old Gabrielle Maddalena, The Woodlands, for 1450 meters of the women's 1500. Then she sprinted for home, just beating her older competitor, 17:32.44 to 17:32.86.

Youth was served again in the very next event, the men's 800 free, as Dayton Raiders' John Koehler, 16, led from 50 meters on to nip The Woodland's Greg Stahl, also 16, 8:24.16 to 8:26.96. Finishing a close third was another Dayton Raider, Jason Piercey, 17, at
8:27.12.

The women's 800m freestyle relay went down to the wire before The Woodlands eked out a victory over Rockville-Montgomery and Curl-Burke. The Woodlands team of
Meredith McCarthy, Gabrielle Maddalena, Taylor Weber, and Ann Degenstein clocked 8:36.05,with Rockville-Montgomery second at 8:41.20 and Curl-Burke 8:41.93.

Rockville-Montgomery made it to the top of the podium by taking the men's 800m free relay. The team of Chris Tappis, Rob Persico, Matt Benedick and Ryan McCabe finished in 7:55.94.

Four seconds back was the quartet from The Woodlands (7:59.40), followed by Fort Lauderdale (8:00.12).

2002 NCSA Junior National Championships – August 5 – 9, 2002
Boca Raton, Florida
