BERLIN, August 4. POLAND'S Otylia Jedrejczak broke the world record this evening in a stunning performance that brought her native land its first-ever women's world record in swimming. <\/p>\n
It was the fifth world mark set at these European Championships, and it came on the final day of competition. <\/p>\n
Jedrejczak clocked 2:05.78, just three-hundredths under the old record of 2:05.81 set by Australia's Susie O'Neill in May 2000.<\/p>\n
The tall Polish swimmer led all the way, but was in a three-way battle for the gold with Hungary's Eva Risztov and Germany's Annika Mehlhorn through 150 meters. But Jedrejczak rocketed off the last turn and powered home in 32.64 — much faster than her rivals — to earn the gold and the historic world record.<\/p>\n
