{"id":402128,"date":"2019-11-14T21:13:31","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T04:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=402128"},"modified":"2019-11-14T21:13:31","modified_gmt":"2019-11-15T04:13:31","slug":"volunteers-grab-2021-verbal-from-indiana-state-runner-up-gus-rothrock-of-carmel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/volunteers-grab-2021-verbal-from-indiana-state-runner-up-gus-rothrock-of-carmel\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers Grab 2021 Verbal from Indiana State Runner-Up Gus Rothrock of Carmel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>NEW COMMIT: Augustus &#8220;Gus&#8221; Rothrock\u00a0<\/b>of Carmel, Ind. has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Tennessee and will join current club teammate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/volunteers-secure-class-of-2025-verbal-from-carmels-griffin-hadley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Griffin Hadley<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in Knoxville in the fall of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Rothrock, who owns five U.S. Open standards, swims year-round with Carmel Swim Club and capped off his stellar summer season at Junior Nationals where he earned 100% best times en route to finishing 13th in the 200m free and 15th in both IMs. Last winter, he recorded a pair of lifetime bests at Juniors East before going on to record six top-15 finishes at Indianapolis Sectionals.<\/p>\n<p>A current junior at Carmel Swim Club, Rothrock is already a four-time Indiana State Championship finalist. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American was the runner-up in the 200 free and 500 free as a sophomore while placing third and fourth, respectively, in those events during his rookie season. He helped his team\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jake-mitchell-wyatt-davis-crush-state-records-to-lead-carmel-to-fifth-straight-indiana-boys-championship-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">secure their fifth-straight<\/a>\u00a0Indiana State Championship title last season and was a member of the record-setting 4\u00d7100 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>He told\u00a0<em>Swimming World:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>&#8220;I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Tennessee. I\u2019m grateful to my family, friends, and coaches for their unwavering support throughout my journey. Can\u2019t wait to be a Vol!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In SCY, his best times include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>200 free &#8211; 1:39.06<\/li>\n<li>500 free &#8211; 4:30.56<\/li>\n<li>1650 free &#8211; 15:50.15<\/li>\n<li>200 fly &#8211; 1:53.57<\/li>\n<li>200 IM &#8211; 1:51.26<\/li>\n<li>400 IM &#8211; 3:57.53<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In LCM, his best times include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>200m free &#8211; 1:52.60<\/li>\n<li>400m free &#8211; 4:02.21<\/li>\n<li>1500m free &#8211; 16:08.54<\/li>\n<li>100m fly &#8211; 56.31<\/li>\n<li>200m fly &#8211; 2:02.98<\/li>\n<li>200m IM &#8211; 2:06.48<\/li>\n<li>400m IM &#8211; 4:28.26<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rothrock has consistently made improvements each season with just under two years of club swimming still to go before arriving at Rocky Top, and he&#8217;s fresh off a breakout long course season.
