But what can it do for beginners and adult-onset swimmers?<\/p>\n<p>We asked two experienced coaches for their advice on the subject and both agree that dryland swim training can benefit any athlete, age and fitness level.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/timcrowley.biz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Crowley<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Montverde Academy and former U.S. Elite Coach of the Year, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stewsmith.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stew Smith<\/strong> \u2013 fitness author<\/a>, former Navy Seal, and trainer for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/navysports.com\/index.aspx?path=mswim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Naval Academy<\/a>\u00a0and Special Ops Teams, had plenty of real-life examples to tell us about.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Teaching new swimmers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI can get anybody in the pool, and after 30-40 minutes of teaching, can get them to swim 25-50 yards and look good,\u201d says Crowley. \u201cBut ask that same person to swim 1000 yards and their stroke falls apart. On a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vasatrainer.com\/product\/swim-ergometer-swimming-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vasa SwimErg<\/a>, I know when neuromuscular fatigue sets in and when the athlete\u2019s stroke is going to fall apart. The motion is familiar even if the medium is not.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Swimming as a life skill<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cSwimming is a survival skill every human should have, \u201d says Smith. \u201cIt\u2019s a fitness training tool, but it can keep you alive and effective in our world that is 75% covered with water. And as far as the military goes, you don\u2019t need to be a world-class swimmer to join special ops programs. \u00a0You just need to be a proficient swimmer. Photo Courtesy: Vasa Trainer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For Coach Crowley, swim-specific training isn\u2019t just learning to tread water, easy side stroking to unwind or even mindlessly swimming endless laps in the pool. Crowley, who trains athletes from amateurs to the elite level, says there are various ways to approach swim-specific training. \u00a0Those include pool workouts, weight room sessions and using dryland swim training equipment like the <a href=\"https:\/\/vasatrainer.com\/product\/vasa-swim-trainer-bench\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trainer Pro<\/a>, all of which can help athletes improve and manage their overall training.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Swimming for fluid movement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Smith puts his athletes and himself in chest-deep water in the pool to work on mobility. \u201cIt\u2019s heavenly,\u201d says Smith. \u201cI started in my 40s. Now that I am in my 50s, it\u2019s a staple of my workout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also makes it a staple for the military athletes who comprise most of his clients. \u201cI like to use swim training, in or out of the water, as a recovery tool. If I get an army guy who just got through a long run, I put him in the pool to recover from that trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And when there\u2019s no pool at hand, he uses dryland swim training the same way. \u201cI love the weightlessness and natural compression of water,\u201d says Smith. \u201cBut you can get many of the same muscular and skeletal benefits of being in the water using a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vasatrainer.com\/product\/swim-ergometer-swimming-machine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vasa SwimErg<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Swim training for balanced conditioning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMost sports are lower body dominant,\u201d says Smith. \u201cSwimming is great for balancing upper-body &amp; lower-body conditioning. \u00a0In a perfect world, swimming should be a part of every athlete\u2019s training program. I enjoy it, especially as I age because there is no impact.
