BERLIN, Germany, Jul 29. A dramatic, unanticipated world record by the powerful German women\u2019s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay was the highlight of the first night of finals of the European Championships, being held in Berlin. The Germans clocked 3:36.00, destroying the world mark of 3:36.61 set by the 2000 USA Olympic team of Amy Van Dyken, Dara Torres, Courtney Shealey and Jenny Thompson.<\/p>\n
Veteran Kathrin Meisner took the team out 26-hundreths under world record pace in a PR 54.82. Petra Dallman followed with an amazing 53.95, though that dropped the Germans just behind the US team's world record pace.<\/p>\n
Another veteran, Sandra Volker, brought the Germans roaring bacxk with a lifetime best split of 53.59, handing over the anchoring chores to the darling of the Berlin crowd, the reborn Franzi van Almsick. Van Almsick responded with a 53.64 aanchor leg to cinch the record.<\/p>\n
Sweden was a distant second in 3:40.66, while an Inge de Bruijn-less Dutch team held off Belarus to get third in 3:41.98. Holland almost certainly would have been second with De Bruijn swimming.<\/p>\n
The men's relay was much closer, but the result was the same, with Germany snatching the gold in 3:17.67, just a hair ahead of Sweden (3:17.75) with Italy taking the bronze (3:18.20).<\/p>\n
Italy Sweeps the 400 Free, <\/b>
\nThe Italian stallions, Emiliano Brembilla and Massi Rosolino went one-two in the 400 free <\/p>\n
clocking 3:45.60 and 3:48.70 from early leader Romanian Dragos Coman, who was just touched out <\/p>\n
for the silver with his 3:48.78.<\/p>\n
Klochkova Holds Off Risztov<\/b>
\nWorld record-holder, Olympic champion and double defending European Champion Yana Klochkova, Ukraine, had to fight all the way to hold off promising 17 year-old Hungarian Eva Risztov, 4:35.10 to 4:36.17. <\/p>\n
Behind after the first two legs, Klotchkova edged ahead in the breast but Risztov wouldn't back down, and it wasn't until the final few meters that Klochkova clinched the win.<\/p>\n
Klochkova's time was a new Championship record. Risztov's time broke the Hungarian national record of 4:36.54 set by the great Kristina Egerszegi in winning gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
Swimming World<\/i> and SwimInfo<\/b> have been following and chronicling Risztov's progress since her breakthrough meet at the 2000 European Junior Championships.<\/p>\n
Klochkova and Risztov have qualified one-two in the 400 free and will battle it out again tomorrow in the final.<\/p>\n
