{"id":400656,"date":"2019-11-02T16:17:12","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T23:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=400656"},"modified":"2019-11-02T16:17:12","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T23:17:12","slug":"northwestern-swimming-sweeps-michigan-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/northwestern-swimming-sweeps-michigan-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Northwestern Swimming Sweeps Michigan State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northwestern swimming swept Big Ten rivals Michigan State Saturday afternoon in East Lansing to put a stamp on their perfect weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats kicked off the day dominating the relays, taking the 400 medley relay on both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s team of <strong>Calypso Sheridan, Hannah Brunzell, Miriam Guevara<\/strong> and <strong>Maddie Smith<\/strong> touched in a time of 3:40.97 to get the &#8216;Cats started with 11 team points.<\/p>\n<p>The Northwestern swimming men&#8217;s team of<strong> Manu Bacarizo, Marcus Mok, Ben Miller<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew Zhang<\/strong> followed suit, touching in 3:17.53 for the NU win.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 free, Northwestern swimming delivered a 1-2 punch, with junior <strong>Krystal Lara <\/strong>just out-touching teammate <strong>Ally Larson<\/strong> for a combined 13 points. Junior <strong>Ryan Gridley<\/strong> led the 1-2-4 finish for the Wildcats in the 100 back, touching in a seasons best time of 49.86. Mok secured his third win of the day in the 200 breast in a time of 2:00.05, almost five seconds faster than second place for a new seasons best.<\/p>\n<p>First-year <strong>Yulia Groysman<\/strong> led the 1-2 sweep of the 500 free, touching a seasons best 4:58.71. The first-year out-touched her competition by over nine seconds.<\/p>\n<p>On the boards, the &#8216;Cats tallied four NCAA Zone diving cuts with<strong> Jaye Patick, Markie Hopkins, Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson<\/strong> and<strong> Evan Labuda<\/strong> each secured cuts. The Wildcats finished the day with 20 event wins, 11 of which were 1-2 sweeps, to outscore the Spartans 171-129 for the women and 172-126 on the men&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/big-ten-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIG TEN COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michigan State highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new pool record was set in the 200 freestyle relay by the <a href=\"https:\/\/msuspartans.com\/news\/2019\/11\/2\/swimming-and-diving-spartans-fall-to-northwestern-in-big-ten-match-up.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spartan<\/a> A relay of <strong>Payton Woods, Aidan Farley, Michael Schwers<\/strong> and <strong>Kevin Mills<\/strong>, with a time of 1:20.56. The women&#8217;s relay also took first (<strong>Allie Heineman, Kennedy Truex, Chloe Reed<\/strong> and <strong>Taylor Arnold<\/strong>), clocking a 1:43.19 time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really cool. I didn&#8217;t know that we were in contention of breaking the pool record so when I heard it over the loud speaker that was really awesome,&#8221; said junior <strong>Aidan Farley<\/strong>. &#8220;It means we&#8217;re in a good spot. We&#8217;re getting ready for midseason in a few weeks and we&#8217;ll be ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Farley finished today&#8217;s meet with three individual victories in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle. He recorded times of 44.48, 1:36.58 and 4:26.74, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the 50 freestyle, seniors Woods and Heineman both claim consecutive victories. Woods, with his second straight win, touched the pad at 20.29, while Henieman, with her third straight win, finished with a time of 23.40.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Sophia Balow<\/strong> claimed another victory for the Spartans in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a time of 10:08.67.<\/p>\n<p>Heineman picked up her second win of the night in the 100 freestyle, with a 51.14 time.<\/p>\n<p>Two Spartans placed in the top three for the men&#8217;s 100 butterfly. With a time of 48.29, senior <strong>Michael Schwers<\/strong> took first, and freshman<strong> Brad Sanford f<\/strong>inished second (50.07).<\/p>\n<p>On the diving side, junior <strong>Amanda Ling<\/strong> claimed first place in the 1-meter (300.67), and in the 3-meter (335.17).
