Minna Atherton\u2019s milestone world record will stand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(Additional reporting Craig Lord)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Australian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/minna-atherton-roars-to-leagues-first-world-record-in-54-89-over-100-back-in-budapest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Minna Atherton<\/strong>\u2019s world record in the 100m backstroke<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/international-swimming-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Swimming League<\/strong><\/a> in Budapest will stand \u2013 and that\u2019s official!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Swimming Australia<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s leading administrators have confirmed today that governing body <strong>FINA<\/strong> would officially recognise the milestone world record of 54.89 seconds \u2013 the first woman under 55 seconds \u2013 and the first Australian to hold a world record in the short-course 100m backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>There had been doubt because the international federation had failed to answer media questions, including those from<em> Swimming World Editor Craig Lord<\/em>, about the status of any World records set in ISL competition. The issue of not counting records that fall by swimmers who prefer to race beyond the World Cup is one that will come back at some stage. It would make no sense whatsoever to discount a World record on the basis that the swimmer made one choice and not the other. In fact, it&#8217;s hard to see how that infringement of rights could stand.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Dolphins head coach Jacco Verhaeren<\/strong>, who was in Budapest to witness his rising star attack the event, like no one had ever attacked it before, reiterated Russell\u2019s comments, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYes the world record will be recognised.
