TALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 26. THE College Swimming Coaches Association of America named Florida State\u2019s Christy Cech and Justin Betts Academic All-Americans for 2002. <\/p>\n
Cech and Betts join 223 other Division I, II, III and junior college athletes to earn the academic honor from the CSCAA. In addition, the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams, under the guidance of head coach Neil Harper, earned CSCAA Academic All-America team honors.<\/p>\n
Cech, who graduated in the spring, not only turned in an impressive swimming career at FSU, but also a 3.88 GPA. In 2002, Cech earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in three events, including conference titles in the 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay. Cech also earned NCAA All-America honorable mention honors with an 11th-place finish in the 50-free. In addition, she competed in the 100-free, finishing 29th overall. Cech leaves FSU holding the school record in the 50- and 100-free.<\/p>\n
The 2002 season proved to be a breakthrough year for Betts, which included competing in three events (100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and 200-yard individual medley) at the NCAA Championships. In addition to his success in the pool, Betts earned a 3.53 GPA. At the 2002 ACC meet, Betts earned a conference title in the 200-medley relay and all-conference honors in the 100-breast. Betts, who returns for his senior season in 2003, also broke the school record in the 200-IM. <\/p>\n
The Lady Seminoles' 3.29 team GPA was the third highest out of the six ACC schools recognized for the honor. The men\u2019s team, which had a combined GPA of 2.81, was one of only four ACC schools to be recognized.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
