{"id":398594,"date":"2019-10-17T18:18:27","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T01:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=398594"},"modified":"2019-10-17T18:18:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T01:18:27","slug":"junior-national-100-fly-champion-ethan-hu-gives-in-state-verbal-to-stanford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/junior-national-100-fly-champion-ethan-hu-gives-in-state-verbal-to-stanford\/","title":{"rendered":"Junior National 100 Fly Champion Ethan Hu Gives In-State Verbal to Stanford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NEW COMMIT:\u00a0<\/strong>Cupertino, Calif. native\u00a0<strong>Ethan Hu\u00a0<\/strong>will stay in-state for his college career after pledging his verbal commitment to Stanford University for the fall of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Hu, who has already achieved the Olympic Trials standards in both butterfly events, swims year-round with Peak Swimming under head coach <strong>Abi Liu<\/strong>. He won the 100m fly at Junior Nationals this past summer where he also placed ninth in the 200m fly after finishing 26th in the former at Phillips 66 Nationals. Last winter, he was the 100 fly runner-up and earned bronze in the 200 IM at Juniors West before going on to win a pair of events at Far Westerns. He also recorded four lifetime bests at Carlsbad Sectionals in March.<\/p>\n<p>Also competing for The Harker School, Hu is a five-time CIF State Championship finalist and a five-time CIF Central Coast Section champion. He won the 100 fly and 200 IM as a junior after placing first and fourth, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season. His time of 45.72 in 2019 was only two-tenths off\u00a0<strong>Joseph Schooling&#8217;s<\/strong> national high school record.<\/p>\n<p>He told\u00a0<em>Swimming World:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #a30d0d;\"><strong>&#8220;I am beyond ecstatic to announce my commitment to Stanford University. It is an honor to have the opportunity to attend such a prestigious institution and continue my passion for swimming. GO CARDINALS!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His best times include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100 fly &#8211; 45.72<\/li>\n<li>200 fly &#8211; 1:45.11<\/li>\n<li>200 IM &#8211; 1:46.53<\/li>\n<li>50 free &#8211; 20.25<\/li>\n<li>100 free &#8211; 45.85<\/li>\n<li>200 free &#8211; 1:40.59<\/li>\n<li>100 back &#8211; 49.28<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hu will make an immediate impact for the Cardinal both individually and on relays when he arrives on the Farm as a member of the class of 2024.
