{"id":398346,"date":"2019-10-16T02:49:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T09:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=398346"},"modified":"2019-10-16T03:01:33","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T10:01:33","slug":"gbrs-tokyo-2020-olympic-coaches-marshall-tigg-hemmings-mcnulty-finck-dale-bates-bircher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gbrs-tokyo-2020-olympic-coaches-marshall-tigg-hemmings-mcnulty-finck-dale-bates-bircher\/","title":{"rendered":"GBR&#8217;s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Coaches: Marshall, Tigg, Hemmings, McNulty, Finck, Dale, Bates &#038; Bircher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Great Britain Tokyo2020 Olympic Coaches Named<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/melanie-marshall-to-coach-london-roar-in-international-swimming-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mel Marshall<\/strong><\/a> and Steven Tigg, respective mentors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-duncan-scott-the-golden-medley-men-head-gbr-world-class-team-of-48\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Adam Peaty and Duncan Scott<\/strong><\/a>, the two leading lights of the Great Britain team at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2019-fina-world-aquatics-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Championships in Gwangju<\/a> back in July, will spearhead a selection of eight <a href=\"https:\/\/tokyo2020.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games<\/a> coaches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dave Hemmings<\/strong>, <strong>David McNulty<\/strong>,<strong> Jol Finck<\/strong>, <strong>Euan Dale<\/strong>, <strong>Lisa Bates<\/strong> and, for open water, <strong>Alan Bircher<\/strong>, complete the coaching line up set to work alongside<strong> Bill Furniss<\/strong>, head coach to Great Britain, at the Games in Japan next July and at preparation camps along the way.<\/p>\n<p>British Swimming announced: &#8220;After a successful World Championship campaign over in South Korea this summer, Dave Hemmings, David McNulty, Jol Finck, Mel Marshall and Steve Tigg have all been named as coaches and will support the team both during the preparation camp, and on pool deck on competition days at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;At the global championships in Gwangju each of the five aforementioned coaches enjoyed success with their individual athletes, as well as taking responsibility for relay quartets, with Mel Marshall and Steve Tigg helping to deliver gold and bronze in the Men\u2019s 4x100m Medley and Mixed 4x100m Medley respectively.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dale and Bates add strength to the mentor mix. Dale, a former Britain international who took up coaching and has long worked with Millfield squad, claimed silver medals for Scotland in the 400m medley and 4x200m freestyle in 2006. All have come through a tough selection process and proved their ability to deliver results in the performance arena. The early appointment of our coaching staff follows the pattern establish in the last Olympic cycle.
