﻿{"id":396880,"date":"2019-10-06T15:10:28","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T22:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=396880"},"modified":"2019-10-07T09:26:21","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T16:26:21","slug":"international-swimming-league-rivals-turn-teammates-adding-to-new-energy-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/international-swimming-league-rivals-turn-teammates-adding-to-new-energy-video\/","title":{"rendered":"International Swimming League: Rivals Turn Teammates, Adding to New Energy (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first International Swimming League meet was filled with firsts \u2014\u00a0the first winner in the series, first day, first points lead, first look at the teams, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>But the International Swimming League also had a sense of renewal as well.<\/p>\n<p>Compatriots are teammates once again, international swimmers returned to the U.S. \u2014\u00a0and old rivalries were renewed.<\/p>\n<p>While the series is billed as a fun competition, there were clearly events that were more fun and others that were more competition.<\/p>\n<p>The relays were extremely fun with two relays from each team side-by-side encouraging each other and raising the energy for the first weekend of the International Swimming League. Some of the individual races were pretty fun-filled as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Siobhan Haughey on Being Teammates With Katie Ledecky in ISL\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vLnQ90cqdKQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-day-2-live-results-sarah-sjostrom-provides-spark-in-100-freestyle-for-energy-standard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAY TWO RECAP<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2019-international-swimming-league-indianapolis-day-2-day-2-international-elite-2019-10-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAY TWO RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/international-swimming-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMPLETE INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING LEAGUE COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there were a few events that had more of a businesslike feel. After all, the better the finish, the more points for your team \u2014\u00a0and the more prize money to gain.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 200 free had more of a businesslike feel.<\/p>\n<p>The event was a who\u2019s who of the world\u2019s best with DC Trident\u2019s <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> (USA) and Cali Condors\u2019 <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> (Australia) leading the field as major international champions. Condors\u2019 <strong>Mallory<\/strong> <strong>Comerford<\/strong> (USA) and Energy Standard\u2019s<strong> Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> (Netherlands) are no stranger to the field as well.<\/p>\n<p>So was DC Trident\u2019s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> (Hong Kong), who nearly scored a medal in this event at the world championships.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the field had competed against each other at world championships or other international meets. Meanwhile, for a two-year stretch, Ledecky, Comerford and Haughey finished in the top four head-to-head in this event at the NCAA championships (with <strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> being the other). Comerford and Haughey continued that rivalry two more years and went <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mallory-comerford-out-touches-taylor-ruck-in-200-free-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1-3 at NCAAs<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the rivalries have changed however, as Ledecky and Haughey are now teammates for the Trident.<\/p>\n<p>Haughey, who has already qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, continued her impressive year by winning the event in 1:52.88, faster than the previous Hong King record. Ledecky was second in 1:53.48, giving the Trident a 1-2 finish.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt is really exciting. It was nothing like I imagined. It was like a college dual meet on a completely different level. I had so much fun with my team,\u201d Haughey said. \u201cI think it is really fun to make new teammates. I love the concept of being able to race everyone not just at the worlds or Olympics. It is awesome we have chances to race against each other and rehearse for the Olympics. It is great having Katie as a teammate. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe 200 free was awesome. I was hoping we could go 1-2 and it was great to make that happen,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI could kind of tell we were out front. It has been cool to get to know my teammates. We are probably about 60 percent American and 40 percent from other countries. So getting to know everyone and having that cultural experience is really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t the only event to have that feel.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 100 backstroke saw Cali Condors teammates <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> (USA) and <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> (Canada) go 1-2. They have had some epic battles on the international stage, now different at the <a href=\"https:\/\/isl.global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t even feel the rivalry because you are on the same team and want to score points together,\u201d Smoliga said. \u201cWe got points together. But of course, we still want to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 50 free skins had the same situation in both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s races with Energy Standard teammates <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> (Sweden) and <strong>Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> (Netherlands) going 1-2. The men\u2019s race saw <strong>Florent Manaudou<\/strong> (France) and <strong>Ben Proud<\/strong> (Great Britain) go 1-2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is more of a tactical thing now,\u201d Sjostrom said. \u201cWe have always raced each other, but now we help each other. She had never done skins before so I gave her a some advice. It was a lot of fun. We have been racing for years and it is great to be on the same team as her now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bringing rivals together adds another layer to swimming, especially among the world\u2019s elite.
