{"id":396878,"date":"2019-10-06T15:12:14","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T22:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=396878"},"modified":"2019-10-07T10:29:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T17:29:30","slug":"katie-ledecky-swim-stars-challenge-fina-world-records-at-league-should-stand-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-swim-stars-challenge-fina-world-records-at-league-should-stand-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Katie Ledecky &#038; Swim Stars Challenge FINA: World Records at League Should Stand (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are very few distance world records that <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> doesn\u2019t hold.<\/p>\n<p>She almost reached one during Sunday\u2019s second session of the International Swimming League (ISL) opening meet in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>But even if she had reached it, there are questions of whether it would have counted.<\/p>\n<p>FINA, international swimming\u2019s governing body, has stated that world records would not count because it is not a FINA-sanctioned event.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky won the 400 free in 3:54.06, to finish a little more than a tenth behind the global standard of Australia\u2019s <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>, which sits at 3:53.92. It broke the American record set by <strong>Katie Hoff<\/strong> in 2010 (3:57.07) \u2014 Hoff&#8217;s last American record standing.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is how close it came:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>56.08; 1:55.37; 2:54.94; 3:53.92 Ariarne Titmus WR &#8211; December 2018<\/li>\n<li>56.31; 1:55.58; 2:55.17; 3:53.97 Wang Jianjiahe WR &#8211; October 2018<\/li>\n<li>56.33; 1:55.24; 2:55.04; 3:54.06 Katie Ledecky &#8211; October 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ledecky said of FINA\u2019s stance on the records:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI didn\u2019t even know that was true, or if it is true. I think all times should count if we are following all the rules, which we are. That is the way it should be.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Katie Ledecky Didn&#039;t Realize She Almost Broke a World Record in the SCM 400 Free\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_7gqQR0sn9E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-day-2-live-results-sarah-sjostrom-provides-spark-in-100-freestyle-for-energy-standard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAY TWO RECAP<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2019-international-swimming-league-indianapolis-day-2-day-2-international-elite-2019-10-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DAY TWO RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/international-swimming-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMPLETE ISL COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other star swimmers agreed, especially since it wasn&#8217;t the only record broken. <strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> also set an American record in the 200 IM (2:04.18).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think in the future I hope it will change,\u201d <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> said. \u201cEveryone will still know which time is the fastest time. It would be weird if she got a world record and it wasn\u2019t recognized. I really hope it will change in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the reasons professional swimmers believed something like the <a href=\"https:\/\/isl.global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISL<\/a> was needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first heard about the ISL, we were excited. For me, it was a bit of a shame that FINA didn\u2019t approve it to start with,\u201d <strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong> said. \u201cI hope FINA will come on board and approve records. It would be a disappointment to see a great swim that was a world record not recognized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last December FINA, after a period in which it threatened swimmers with bans if they raced at a League test event that had to be cancelled because FINA would not give approval, stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;As to the issue of alleged athlete bans resulting from participation in unsanctioned events, FINA merely stated that results achieved in competitions for which approval and sanction were not duly sought and obtained would not be recognised\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":pl\" tabindex=\"-1\">The trouble with that statement (and other like it) is twofold: it does not answer the question of a world record directly; it does not alter the fact that rules currently in the FINA handbook could still be used to ban and refuse to ratify. As one observer out it: &#8220;The rule book of FINA needs changing to take account of the new reality.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"-1\"><\/div>\n<div tabindex=\"-1\">Ratification of records would not be a problem in terms of FINA rules, all conditions met, including anti-doping tests, which are being conducted by national testing agencies at each of the ISL events.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt is a shame FINA wouldn\u2019t recognize our team. We are growing the sport, which would in turn, grow FINA\u2019s meets,\u201d <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> said. \u201cThey should go hand-in-hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was still the fastest time by an American.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky won head-to-head against Titmus in Indianapolis \u2014 their first meeting since the World Championships in Gwangju and where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ariarne-titmus-takes-katie-ledeckys-crown-with-thunder-from-down-under-finish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Titmus beat the American for gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI honestly didn\u2019t know if that was a fast time until someone told me it was the American record and a tenth off the world record,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t aiming for any records or anything at this meet. It is about getting up and going fast and scoring as many points as I can for my team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reason she doesn\u2019t hold the short-course record is simple. She hasn\u2019t competed much in short course during her career, like most of the American swimmers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI had probably the best September of training I have ever had, so I feel like I am a little ahead of where I have been at this point of the season,\u201d Katie Ledecky said. \u201cI haven\u2019t really had a big short-course meet. I did Duel in the Pool in Scotland in 2014, but I had a really bad sinus infection, so I think I went 4:02 or 4:03. So I knew I would go a couple best times in this meet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She just didn\u2019t know she would be at a record pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt really good to race healthy, happy and feel like I am making some good steps already this fall,\u201d she said. \u201cIt went about as well as it could have gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Condors general manager <strong>Jason Lezak<\/strong>&#8216;s take:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese are professional athletes that really have never been treated like professionals. Although some of them have sponsors or make a little money to get by, some of them also have jobs. This will hopefully continue to grow into something where this is all they\u2019re going to do and they\u2019re going to focus on this like the other big sports.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s taken some minor changes to get to something big,\u201d Katie Ledecky said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd I think we\u2019re finally at somewhere pretty big. It\u2019s going to continue to get tweaked and everything.
