{"id":396757,"date":"2019-10-05T18:42:25","date_gmt":"2019-10-06T01:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=396757"},"modified":"2019-10-05T18:47:43","modified_gmt":"2019-10-06T01:47:43","slug":"natalie-coughlin-makes-comeback-with-isl-for-next-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/natalie-coughlin-makes-comeback-with-isl-for-next-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Natalie Coughlin Makes Comeback With ISL For &#8216;Next Generation&#8217; (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> wasn\u2019t quite sure what to expect when she got behind the blocks.<\/p>\n<p>She was a little intimidated being back in the competitive pool for the first time since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, even 12-time Olympic medalists can get nervous in a new situation \u2014\u00a0especially after being away from competitive swimming for so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the technical meeting I started to get a little nervous, because I was looking around and everyone is in Olympic training, and I have barely swum, so it was a little intimidating,\u201d Coughlin said. \u201cThe entire day was something I was looking forward to. I was looking forward to racing. I kept waiting for the nerves to hit but they never really hit, which was good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, everything came rushing back when she got behind the blocks for the first International Swimming League meet in Indianapolis \u2014 the memories, the competitive spirit and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/natalie-coughlin-excited-to-race-in-return-to-swimming-in-isl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">desire to race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coughlin competed in the 50-meter back, going 27.69 to finish seventh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had my pre-race dialed in for so long, I thought it would be weird, but it was like riding a bike,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Natalie Coughlin &quot;I Was Waiting For the Nerves to Hit and they Never Really Hit&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/habvLn4PHuU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/international-swimming-league\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMPLETE ISL COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sjostrom-manaudou-power-energy-to-strong-lead-after-1st-day-of-international-swimming-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIRST DAY RECAP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coughlin wasn\u2019t sure what to expect out of herself, not just because of the layoff and having a baby, but the fact that short-course meters is such a rare format for U.S. swimmers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cMy expectation was to beat the entry time standard, which I actually really didn\u2019t know because I haven\u2019t raced short-course meters much. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The next generation of swimmers was thrilled to have a legend like Natalie Coughlin part of this historic meet in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was awesome. Natalie and I were on the same flight from San Francisco,\u201d <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> said. \u201cIt was great to see her back in the water. It is just amazing what she has done for the sport. It is so awesome that she is here, given how much of an impact she has had on the sport. It is really cool to have someone as iconic as her here to celebrate this turning point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Coughlin realizes how pivotal the <a href=\"https:\/\/isl.global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISL<\/a> could be for the future of swimming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was talking with my DC Trident teammates, it is hard when you are training for the Olympic games and are coming off the world championships, it is hard to see how special this is. I wanted them to understand how fun this is,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is obvious there is a desire for more swimming and events like this. As these weeks go on, it is going to get bigger. It is about getting our foot in the door and showing there is a market for this.
