The first day of the 2019 FINA World Cup had some good races in Budapest as some of the world’s best stars that aren’t competing in the first cluster of the International Swimming League this weekend. The biggest race of the day came from\u00a0Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>of the Netherlands who moved into the top ten in the world in the 100 breast with a 59.05. Kamminga was quicker than his season best time, including what he went at the World Championships when he was 13th in the semi finals with a 59.4.<\/p>\n

This has to be a big confidence boost for Kamminga, swimming in a lower pressure meet and swimming a best time after (presumably) taking some time off after Worlds. Kamminga is now tied for eighth in the world rankings for 2019.<\/p>\n

    Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>continued his strong World Cup circuit as he won the 50 free with a 21.50 for his fourth win in the event of the circuit. The win also delivered his 100th podium in world-cup waters. This was faster than what Morozov swam to get fourth place at the World Championships with a 21.53, but it was slower than his season best of 21.2 from the World Cup in Singapore three weeks after Worlds. Morozov has been fairly consistent in the 50 free this season, and is proving he is in good shape to chase his first individual medal at the Olympics next summer.<\/p>\n

    Hungary’s\u00a0Kristof Milak<\/strong>, fresh off an unbelievable 200 fly world record<\/a> this summer, swam a 51.27 in the 100 fly in front of the Budapest crowd as he was just 0.01 off his finals time from the World Championships where he was fourth. Milak was a 51.26 at World Championships but was a 50.9 in the semi finals. He stormed onto the international scene when he was 17 at the World Championships two years ago in the 100 fly in this very pool, so he has shown he swims best in the Duna Arena.<\/p>\n

    Lithuania’s\u00a0Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>continued his World Cup dominance as he has won the 400 free at all four stops thus far, winning in Budapest with a 3:49.09. He was well off his swims from the Asia cluster but he presumably took an extended break after that since he swam at the World Championships then swam three consecutive meets in different countries in back-to-back-to-back weekends. Rapsys finished ahead of Hungarian superhero\u00a0Kristof Milak\u00a0<\/strong>(3:49.80). Rapsys notably pulled out of the International Swimming League<\/a> to make more money swimming at the FINA World Cup and to swim long course.<\/p>\n

    The biggest women’s race of the day went to Sweden’s\u00a0Michelle Coleman\u00a0<\/strong>in the 50 free as she beat a stacked field with a 24.56, putting her 14th in the world rankings. Coleman was much faster than she swam at the World Championships when she was 14th in the semi finals with a 24.9. Coleman beat 2012 Olympic Champion\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>(24.62) and Worlds bronze medalist\u00a0Cate Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>(24.69).<\/p>\n

    Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>continued to rake in World Cup prize money as she won the 200 fly with a 2:08.55 much to the delight of the Hungarian crowd.<\/p>\n
