SYDNEY, July 19. THE Sydney Aquatic Centre crowd bid farewell today to the Australian Commonwealth Games Swimming team at the Telstra Grand Prix Two finale before the team flew to its German training base in Sindelfingen.<\/p>\n
In an exciting morning of swimming action, Victorian, Brooke Hanson set a new Australian All comers record in the 100 metre breaststroke.<\/p>\n
For Hanson it signals a good start to her Commonwealth Games preparations with the 24-year-old clocking the new all comers time in 1:06.58, bettering Sam Riley's 1998 mark of 1:06.72. Yesterday Hanson broke Helen Denman's 1998 Australian 50m short course record with a time of 30.71, then went on to win the 200.<\/p>\n
"I have only just started my taper and been training long course for the last two weeks, so to break all my short course personal bests and take the Australian record in the 50 metre last night in the semifinal was great," Hanson said.<\/p>\n
"I thought maybe I've got too much speed for the 200 metre event, but my major goal is the Com Games and to achieve these times now is unbelievable," she said.
\n"I am swimming the 100 and 200 metre in Manchester and my dream is to win a medal."<\/p>\n
Hanson's Commonwealth Games teammates, Leisel Jones (1:07.60) finished second, while Sarah Kasoulis (1:09.20) was third.<\/p>\n
Grant Hackett was back in the pool after his 400 metre world record performance last night. It was the 100 metre freestyle where he touched in 49.63 to win the race and the overall combined 1000m title. Miami training partner, Stephen Penfold wrapped up a great meet finishing second to Hackett in the 100 metre event (50.54) and overall cumulative time (9:09.53) while fellow Queenslander, Joshua Krogh was third (51.96 & 9:22.47).<\/p>\n
In the women's 1000m cumulative freestyle it was Campbelltown's, Commonwealth Games team member, Amanda Pascoe, with a total time of 10:13.85 to relegate Sydney 2000 Olympian, Kirsten Thomson (10:17.58) to second with Meagan Walker rounding out the minor placings in 10:27.23. <\/p>\n
Commonwealth Games veteran, Robert van der Zant (1:59.29) signalled his preparations are on track, taking out the men's 200 metre individual medley. Joshua Taylor (2:02.24) took second place while consistent Western Australian, Adam Lucas ,was third in 2:02.56.<\/p>\n
In the women's 200 metre individual medley, Olympic finalist and Manchester bound, Jennifer Reilly (2:15.12) took the honours while her Commonwealth Games teammate Jessica Abbott (2:15.66) finished in second place. South Australian teenager, Karina Leane took the bronze in 2:16.92.<\/p>\n
Australian Elite Athlete with a Disability (EAD) Commonwealth Games team member, Ben Austin set his fourth world record of the meet, clocking a time of 1:00.54 in the 100m free. It was 0.30 of a second faster than the previous mark he set yesterday. Patrick Donachie (58.57) Alex Harris (1:06.58) rounded out the placegetters.<\/p>\n
Commonwealth Games (EAD) competitor, Dianna Ley (1:07.34) took out the women's 100 metre freestyle ahead of Paralympic gold medallist, Siobhan Paton (1:02.44) with Alicia Aberley rounding out the placegetters in 1:05.29.<\/p>\n
