The NCAA season has barely gotten started but the Texas men have already showed some lightning this season before we hit October. The Longhorns swam their orange vs. white intrasquad meet on Friday night and used the early-season low pressure meet as an opportunity to put on jammers.<\/p>\n

FULL RESULTS<\/a><\/p>\n

The big star of the day was 6’7″ sophomore Daniel Krueger<\/strong><\/a>, who won the 50 and 100 free with a 19.32 and 41.99 respectively. Krueger was a 19.31 at NCAAs last year in the very same pool in Austin but was a 19.1 leading off the 200 free relay. Regardless, the fact that he is already swimming at his taper performances from last year is a great sign for the Longhorns moving forward as they are looking to get the national title back after winning four straight from 2015-2018.<\/p>\n

Krueger also swam a 41.99 in the 100 free, which would have scored at NCAAs last year. He was fourth in the 100 last season with a 41.5 and was the fastest returning swimmer to the NCAA this season. And the fact he is already dipping under 42 this early in the season could spell trouble for anyone else trying to run him down.<\/p>\n

Krueger finished ahead of some notable Texas transfers in both of his races as\u00a0Alvin Jiang\u00a0<\/strong>(from North Carolina) was second in the 50 at 19.94 and\u00a0Maxime Rooney\u00a0<\/strong>(from Florida<\/a>) was second in the 100 (42.95).<\/p>\n

This was also Rooney’s first chance to race in yards as a Longhorn after spending the first three seasons of his college career at Florida. Rooney had a huge summer in 2019, putting himself in the top ten in the world in the 100 fly and 100 free in long course. He was fourth in the 200 fly (1:45.86), second in the 100 (47.53) and was a 20.1 leading off the 200 free relay in addition to his second place finish in the 100 free.<\/p>\n

Another big takeaway from Texas’ orange vs. white meet is the amount of stellar backstrokers that Texas has. Senior Ryan Harty<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 45.49 in the 100 back, which would have just missed a second swim at NCAA’s last year, but it is not far off his best time of 45.05 from last year’s NCAAs. Harty took second in the longer distance to last year’s national runner-up\u00a0Austin Katz<\/strong>, who blasted a 1:41.68. Katz was second in the 100 to Harty in a tie with fellow junior Jiang at 46.37.<\/p>\n

The other two-time event winner was sophomore\u00a0Drew Kibler<\/strong>, who won the 200 (1:33.97) and 500 free (4:20.84). Kibler was the fastest returner this year in the 200 free after he was third as a freshman last season.<\/p>\n

Texas has had a problem finding a breaststroker since\u00a0Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>graduated in 2017 but they have two solid freshmen that showed out quite nicely in their first official meet as Longhorns.\u00a0Caspar Corbeau\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 breast at 1:55.49 and also finished second to current sophomore\u00a0Charlie Scheinfeld\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100, the latter taking first in 52.86 while Corbeau was a 53.03. Fellow freshman\u00a0Jake Foster\u00a0<\/strong>also had a solid debut, placing second in the 200 breast (1:56.22) and taking the win in the 200 IM (1:46.28).<\/p>\n

Other winners on the day were\u00a0Alex Zettle\u00a0<\/strong>in the 1000 (8:58.07) and\u00a0Sam Pomajevich\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 fly (1:43.48).<\/p>\n
