{"id":394907,"date":"2019-09-20T15:07:27","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T22:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=394907"},"modified":"2019-09-20T15:07:27","modified_gmt":"2019-09-20T22:07:27","slug":"cals-zheng-quah-crowned-king-of-the-pool-in-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cals-zheng-quah-crowned-king-of-the-pool-in-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal&#8217;s Zheng Quah Crowned King of the Pool in Opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior <strong>Zheng Wen Quah<\/strong> is heading back to Berkeley with bragging rights after being crowned King of the Pool at California\u2019s 2019-20 season-opening competition at Cal Poly\u2019s Anderson Aquatic Center on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Quah came out on top of the unique five-race event that tasked Cal and Cal Poly swimmers with 100-yard races in the butterfly, backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley. The senior posted the lowest five-race time (4:02.68) and bested the rest of the field by more than six seconds with wins in the 100 fly (46.34), 100 back (46.52), 100 free (43.80) and 100 IM (49.01).<\/p>\n<p>The lone event Quah did not win was the 100 breast, which was claimed by sophomore <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong> (53.59). Quah won the first and last two disciplines of the day, with Whitley\u2019s breaststroke win coming in the third race of the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Bears <strong>Daniel Carr<\/strong> (4.08.86), <strong>Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> (4:09.64), Whitley (4:11.64) and <strong>Chris Jhong<\/strong> (4:16.85) rounded out the top five overall finishers. Gonzalez, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Auburn, looked strong in his first races as a Bear, taking second place in the 100 breast (54.92) and 100 IM (49.35). <strong>Jason Louser<\/strong> was Cal\u2019s top freshman performer, using a four-place finish in the 100 breast (55.88) to take seventh overall.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NEXT TIME<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bears\u2019 next competition takes them to Stockton, Calif., for a dual meet at Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 3.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2014 The above press release was posted by Swimming World in conjunction with Cal<\/i><i>.
