The swimming off-season is still ongoing as there has not been a lot of action from the pool in the last seven days. However, there was a world junior record from\u00a0Shoma Sato\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan, who finally broke the 200 breast record after being so close all summer. Also in Japan, superstar\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>made her first public appearance at the College Championships in Tokyo after being diagnosed with leukemia in February.<\/p>\n

In International Swimming League (ISL) news, Gregg Troy\u00a0<\/strong>was named as the head coach of the Cali Condors alongside Australian\u00a0Dean Boxall<\/strong> as those two lead a very strong team into the first season of the ISL.\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>was a late addition to the Condors team as he was also named an ambassador for the team that will start competing in October.<\/p>\n

In NCAA news,\u00a0Mike Westphal\u00a0<\/strong>was terminated as associate head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #5: Gregg Troy, Dean Boxall to Coach Cali Condors<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0Cali Condors<\/a>\u00a0introduced its coaches for the inaugural\u00a0International Swim League (ISL)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0set to kick off this October with\u00a0Gregg Troy<\/strong>,\u00a0Dean Boxall\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jeff Julian\u00a0<\/strong>on staff. Troy will be the head coach while Boxall and Julian will be the assistants.<\/p>\n

Troy coaches the pro group at Gator Swim Club in Gainesville, Florida as\u00a0three of his athletes<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>,\u00a0Jan Switkowski\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Mark Szaranek\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 are on the roster. Former Florida Gator\u00a0Natalie Hinds\u00a0<\/strong>is also on the roster although she trains with\u00a0Jack Bauerle\u00a0<\/strong>at Athens Bulldog Swim Club in Georgia.<\/p>\n

Boxall coaches the team at St. Peters Western in Australia, notably\u00a0Ariarne Titmus<\/strong><\/a>, who surprised\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0win the 400 free at the World Championships<\/a>\u00a0this past summer. Titmus will be on the Condors roster this fall as well as World Champion\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada and\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States.<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #4: Shoma Sato Breaks World Junior Record<\/h3>\n

Japan\u2019s\u00a0Shoma Sato\u00a0<\/strong>broke the\u00a0world junior record<\/a>\u00a0in the 200 breast on Sunday at the Japanese College Swimming Championships in Tokyo. Sato broke the record with a 2:09.21, splitting a 1:02.14 on the first 100 as he lowered the old junior record of 2:09.39 from China\u2019s\u00a0Qin Haiyang\u00a0<\/strong>set in 2017.<\/p>\n

Sato rattled the record earlier this year when he was a 2:09.42 at the Japan Open in 2019. He was a favorite to win the gold at the World Juniors a couple weeks ago but was out-touched at the finish by USA\u2019s\u00a0Josh Matheny<\/strong><\/a>, who won the gold at 2:09.40 to Sato\u2019s 2:09.56.<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #3: Indiana University Fires Mike Westphal<\/h3>\n

Indiana University fired associate head swimming coach\u00a0Mike Westphal\u00a0<\/strong>on Thursday after it was earlier reported he was arrested on charges of allegedly intimidating a former Indiana athlete who is now a local swim coach.<\/p>\n

Indiana University released a statement on the incident:<\/p>\n

\u201c(Thursday), associate head swimming coach Mike Westphal\u2019s employment was terminated effective immediately related to an incident that is detailed in the probable cause affidavit from the Bloomington Police Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #2: Caeleb Dressel Signs With Cali Condors as ISL Ambassador<\/h3>\n

USA superstar\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0has become the latest big name to sign up for the upcoming International Swimming League competition.<\/p>\n

Dressel, who won a record eight medals at July\u2019s World Championships, joins\u00a0Nathan Adrian, Cate Campbell, Katinka Hosszu, Katie Ledecky, Florent Manaudou, Ryan Murphy, Adam Peaty, Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>\u00a0as an ISL ambassador ahead of next month\u2019s inaugural event.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to be part of the ISL family,\u201d said the 23-year-old, who will swim for the Cali Condors. \u201cI can\u2019t wait for this new event to start in October in Indianapolis!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #1: Rikako Ikee Makes First Public Appearance After Leukemia Diagnosis<\/h3>\n

2018 Pan Pacs gold medalist and Japanese superstar\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>made her first public appearance on Friday since being\u00a0diagnosed with leukemia<\/a> earlier this year. Ikee was in attendance at the College Swimming Championships in Tokyo, cheering for her Nihon University teammates.<\/p>\n

Ikee, 19, was wearing a face mask and sitting with other teammates watching the meet. According to Kyodo News, Ikee was feeling well enough to attend the meet and her management agency said she had a strong desire to see her teammates compete.<\/p>\n

Ikee was diagnosed with leukemia in February, a devastating blow to the 19-year-old\u2019s chances at World Championships gold in 2019 and also hindered her preparations for a home Olympics in 2020.<\/p>\n
