{"id":393113,"date":"2019-09-05T02:10:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T09:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=393113"},"modified":"2019-09-05T17:40:10","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T00:40:10","slug":"know-my-name-chanel-miller-brock-turners-victim-reveals-her-name-ahead-of-memoir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/know-my-name-chanel-miller-brock-turners-victim-reveals-her-name-ahead-of-memoir\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Know My Name &#8211; Chanel Miller&#8221;: Brock Turner&#8217;s Victim Reveals Her Name Ahead Of Memoir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>&#8220;Know My Name &#8211; Chanel Miller&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The woman who was sexually assaulted by former Stanford University student and swimmer\u00a0<strong>Brock Turner<\/strong> has revealed her real name for the first time ahead of publication of her story under the title: <strong>&#8220;Know My Name &#8211; Chanel Miller&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Known during her legal proceedings as <strong>Emily Doe <\/strong>&#8211; the term used for victims who cannot be identified for legal reasons &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2019\/09\/04\/chanel-miller-stanford-sexual-assault-victim-reveals-identity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chanel Miller<\/a> &#8220;reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words\u201d, in her book, according to Viking, the publisher, ahead of the work&#8217;s release on September 24.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Turner was found guilty of sexually assaulting Miller outside a fraternity party in 2015. Last the time, County judge <strong>Aaron Persky<\/strong> sentenced Turner to just six months in jail, despite a potential for a sentence of 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>Persky believed that Turner was \u201cremorseful\u201d even though the former swimmer never admitted guilt in raping Miller. Turner ended up serving three of the six months.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/brock-turners-conviction-upheld-by-california-appeals-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Last year, Turner&#8217;s conviction was upheld by a California appeals court. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The original case included Turner being charged with sexual assault of an intoxicated person and sexual assault with intent to commit rape. His victim was revealed as a 22-year-old woman who had blacked out from drinking at a campus party in January 2015. Turner was 19 at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Miller\u2019s powerful victim impact statement, which she read at Turner\u2019s sentencing hearing, and Turner\u2019s lenient sentence sparked debate about &#8220;rape culture&#8221; and &#8220;white male privilege&#8221;. That all contributed to California passing minimum sentencing requirements for sexual assault cases.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/judge-who-sentenced-ex-stanford-swimmer-for-sexual-assault-recalled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">voters recalled Persky,<\/a> who thus became the first judge in California to be successfully recalled since 1932.<\/p>\n<p>Miller&#8217;s first interview in her own name will be <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsn.ws\/2zO1LIZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broadcast on CBS\u2019 \u201c60 Minutes\u201d<\/a> two days before publication of her book, on September 22.<\/p>\n<p>Miller graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and now lives in San Francisco, where she works as a writer and artist. She has been working on her book since early 2017, her publisher told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/04\/books\/chanel-miller-brock-turner-assault-stanford.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Know My Name &#8211;
