There\u2019s Pacific, which\u2014until derailed in last year\u2019s conference final\u2014had won back-to-back GCC titles (2016, 2017) behind a pair of foreign players. An accomplished college player who made a living crisscrossing Europe as a professional, Arroyo is one of the top assistants to <strong>Dejan Udovicic<\/strong>, U.S. National Team head coach. Arroyo is also the 49ers men\u2019s and women\u2019s coach, leading one to wonder: When does he ever take a break?<\/p>\n<p>As far as <a href=\"https:\/\/longbeachstate.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Long Beach State<\/strong><\/a> (#5T) fans are concerned: never!<\/p>\n<p>Last year, after a painfully slow start with a squad containing 15 underclassmen, including nine true freshmen, the 49ers caught fire, winning six straight matches\u2014including beating Pacific twice\u2014to lock up their first NCAA berth since 1991. A catalyst of this run was freshman <strong>Garrett Zaan<\/strong>. A strong performer for the U.S. Junior Team, Zaan delivered 25 goals in 2018, and is perhaps responsible for more largess: former Oiler teammates <strong>Quinten Osborne<\/strong> (via UCLA) and <strong>Ethan Wojciechowski<\/strong> (via Cal) will join Zaan this fall to bolster an offense that netted 261 goals last year.<\/p>\n<p>Arroyo also brought in <strong>Rafael Vergara<\/strong>\u2014a young talent for the Brazil national team\u2014as well as goalie <strong>Liam Ward<\/strong>. In addition to Zaan, returning 49ers include <strong>Austin Stewart<\/strong>, who led the team with 56 goals and 12 assists, <strong>Johnathan Wong<\/strong> (22 goals) and <strong>Theodoros Pateros<\/strong> (17 goals). Also returning: goalie <strong>Marwan Darwish<\/strong>. A two-year, eight-match winning streak in conference play was snapped by LBS last season, but the core of Head Coach <strong>James Graham\u2019s<\/strong> highly successful squad remains intact.<\/p>\n<p>Two-time GCC Player of the Year <strong>Luke Pavillard<\/strong> (78 goals, 29 assists), <strong>Engin Ege Colak<\/strong> (66 goals) and <strong>Luis Araya<\/strong> (41 goals, 41 assists) all return for their senior years in Stockton. Then, they weren\u2019t; the Gauchos season ended abruptly when UCSB Athletics decided to shut down the team at the end of the regular season\u2014the result of an unspecified NCAA violation.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ucsb-statement-on-gcc-water-polo-tournament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>UCSB Statement on Skipping 2018 GCC Men\u2019s Water Polo Tournament<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>For 2019, the belief is that UCSB\u2014picked first in the GCC Coaches preseason poll\u2014will be highly motivated to win a GCC title and qualifying for NCAAs for the first time since 1990. <strong>Boris Jovanovic<\/strong> (team-leading 28 goals) graduated, but Head Coach <strong>Wolf Wigo&#8217;s<\/strong> next four leading scorers are back, including <strong>Ivan Gvozdanovic<\/strong> (48 goals, 35 assists, 37 steals) and <strong>Jacob Halle<\/strong> (16 goals, 18 assists). Junior goalie <strong>Tiago Bonchristiano<\/strong> (149 saves) returns with <strong>Danny Roland<\/strong>\u2014late of UCLA\u2014and <strong>Justyn Barrios <\/strong>options off the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Wigo has brought in a strong crop of freshmen; <strong>Mason Chambliss<\/strong> of San Ramon Valley; <strong>Jonathan Matarangas <\/strong>and <strong>Logan Sutter<\/strong> of Valley Christian and <strong>Colton Gregory<\/strong> of Laguna Beach. The legendary U.S. Olympic star\u2014Schroeder captained back-to-back Olympic silver medalists in 1984 and 1988 then coached the Americans to silver in 2008\u2014he is also the last coach to lead a non-Pac 12 team to an NCAA title when the Waves won in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Before Pepperdine faithful start buying their NCAA tickets, the Waves\u2014which went 16-11 with a 3-1 record in GCC play\u2014will need to determin who\u2019s in goal. <strong>John Claude Marco<\/strong> (188 saves) is the incumbent but Schroeder has senior <strong>Conrad Gordon<\/strong>, junior <strong>Kyle McKenny<\/strong> and freshman <strong>Kent Emden<\/strong> waiting in the wings.<\/p>\n<p>Newcomers include <strong>Zach Arthur<\/strong> of Redlands Valley East, <strong>Xavier Marco<\/strong> of Sacred Heart Prep, <strong>Austin Smit<\/strong> of Cathedral Catholic High School, <strong>Connor Settem<\/strong> of Moorpark and <strong>Kaden Kaneko<\/strong> from Mater Dei. Head Coach <strong>Marc Hunt<\/strong> will look for a revival of UCI fortunes behind <strong>Jason Evezard<\/strong> (64 goals), 2018 GCC Newcomer of the Year, and junior <strong>Casey Lynton<\/strong> (28 goals, 28 assists, conference-best 42 steals).<\/p>\n<p>To ingnite this renaissance, Hunt has brought eight freshmen on to the conference\u2019s youngest side (16 lower classmen) including <strong>Chad Gornay<\/strong> of Redlands East Valley, <strong>Jack Green<\/strong> of Huntington Beach and <strong>Oliver Teitscheid<\/strong> of Master Dei, and added <strong>Ivan Mercep<\/strong>\u2014brother of USC\u2019s Jacob\u2014as a transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Senior<strong> Chandler Mankins<\/strong> (46 saves) will get first crack at the UCI goalie cage vacated by <strong>Byron Rivers<\/strong> (193 saves), who was lost to graduation.
