Test Run For Tokyo: 2019 FINA World Championships Recap<\/span><\/h2>\n

With the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo a year away, this summer\u2019s World Championships, July 21-28, in Gwangju, South Korea was a global meet of watersheds, with pioneers refusing to yield to youth and youth seizing their day to overtake pioneers. It also served as confirmation that we live in a new age of longevity and strong dynasties that don\u2019t lie down on a conveyor belt of progress that rarely rests.<\/p>\n

After the curtain fell on eight days of sizzling racing, Gwangju will now be remembered as the<\/em> World Championships…<\/p>\n

\u2022 of Americans Caeleb Dressel and Simone Manuel, with Caeleb winning a record eight medals and Simone seven;
\n\u2022 of their teammate Regan Smith and Hungarian Kristof Milak as the new pioneer time warpers of their generation;
\n\u2022 and of Great Britain\u2019s Adam Peaty, with Project 56 conquered and a unique triple-double of crowns accomplished for good measure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The end of July also delivered a week in Korea\u2019s typhoon season when swimming\u2019s global leadership was reminded of the gathering storm heading their way at the dawn of pro-athlete power.<\/p>\n

If the 18th FINA showcase since 1973 saw Dressel, Peaty, American Lilly King and Hungarian Katinka Hosszu nail their dominance to the mast, among far less predictable outcomes was the felling of both butterfly world records held by Michael Phelps just three years before his retirement as the most decorated Olympian, all-time, all sports.<\/p>\n

Stunning efforts of 1:50.73 from Milak over 200 meters and then 49.50 from Dressel in the 100 meter fly topped the men\u2019s league of extraordinary performances at the championships.<\/p>\n
