{"id":391506,"date":"2019-08-22T13:30:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T20:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=391506"},"modified":"2019-08-24T14:45:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T21:45:43","slug":"polo-has-no-place-for-nazis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/polo-has-no-place-for-nazis\/","title":{"rendered":"Commentary: Polo has No Place for Nazis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a story from earlier this week that at first glance seems patently absurd, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/pacifica-high-school-students-sang-nazi-song-and-gave-hitler-salute\">video clips<\/a> jangling around social media show water polo players from Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California making \u201cHeil Hitler\u201d salutes and chanting a Nazi anthem during a sports banquet. Originally broken by The Daily Beast, additional reporting has identified more examples of this contemptible behavior, including multiple references of the polo players engaging in rituals associated with Adolf Hitler&#8217;s regime.<\/p>\n<p>Hate speech and the use of symbols and salutes related to the Nazi era is inexcusable under any conditions\u2014and, in Germany, is punishable by up to three years in prison\u2014but the timing of this story is noteworthy, coming as it does a week after the U.S. men\u2019s and women\u2019s senior national teams represented their country at the 2019 Pan American Games.<\/p>\n<p>The roster of both American teams in Lima, Peru for Pan Ams was drawn primarily from Orange County, the same rich reservoir of polo talent in Southern California where Garden Grove is located. That, and the sport they play so well, are where overlap between Team USA and the Pacifica program end. The American athletes I spoke with in Lima\u2014and I chatted with a number of them\u2014could not have been more respectful, not only of my coverage of their sport, but also of their hosts and their competition, drawn from both North and South America.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the insult to the Nazis\u2019 victims\u2014and those now menaced by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/new-hate-and-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rising tide<\/a> of white supremacy in our country and beyond\u2014there is the damage done to the reputations of our national teams and a sport in America that apparently only garners attention when someone commits a <a href=\"https:\/\/usatodayhss.com\/2019\/report-socal-high-school-swept-allegations-of-sex-abuse-against-water-polo-coach-under-rug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heinous crime<\/a>. The majority of the U.S. population likely has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/26\/us\/womens-water-polo-championship-win-usa-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no idea<\/a> that their national women\u2019s team is on one of the greatest winning streaks in the sport\u2019s history. In addition to winning 59 straight matches, Team USA has won back-to-back Olympic golds, three-straight World Championships, gold in five-consecutive Pan American Games and titles in 12-straight major tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the American women and five of the men on the U.S. Pan Am rosters have already represented their country at an Olympics. All 22 will proudly wear the red, white and blue at Tokyo next July. That their sport is besmirched by the contemptible actions of a foolish few is beyond disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>To speak with <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong>\u2014unquestionably the world\u2019s most accomplished female player\u2014about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2019-pan-american-round-up-krikorian-steffens-on-water-polo-in-the-southern-hemisphere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her efforts<\/a> to grow the sport she loves in Puerto Rico, the country of her father\u2019s birth, is to be inspired by her candor and sincerity. Or <strong>Kiley<\/strong> and <strong>Jamie Neushul<\/strong>, sisters who starred on NCAA-winning teams at Stanford and are now fierce competitors for the world\u2019s best team. There\u2019s <strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong>, the first-ever player from the East to win Olympic polo gold. Her passion and thoughtful analysis of the game don\u2019t just reflect her upbringing in Miami and education at Princeton, one of the country\u2019s great institutions of higher learning, they&#8217;re a reflection of what an admirable representative Johnson is of her country.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, Head Coach <strong>Dejan Udovicic\u2019s<\/strong> young roster\u2014the average age of the ten players in Lima not named <strong>Jesse Smith<\/strong> is 24\u2014are as respectful and courteous as might be imagined. <strong>Johnny Hooper<\/strong>, the hyper-kinetic attacker from SoCal who played college ball at Cal, was both forthright and unfailingly polite in responding to questions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-men-go-up-big-against-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">after a big win<\/a> at the Villa Maria del Triunfo Aquatics Complex. <strong>Alex Wolf<\/strong>, the U.S. goalie whose Huntington Beach High School neighbored but doesn\u2019t play Pacifica, is an athlete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/at-2019-pan-american-mens-water-polo-final-long-time-dreams-collide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living an Olympic dream<\/a>. There\u2019s no way he would be cavalier\u2014or foolish\u2014enough to do anything that might disgrace his country.<\/p>\n<p>Having interviewed collegiate athletes from Harvard to Hopkins, from St. Francis to Stanford to USC, I used to think there was no such thing as a dumb water polo player.
