TWO Bay Area college foes, Stanford's Tara Kirk and Cal's Natalie Coughlin, were the record-setters on Day 3 of the 35th Santa Clara Invitational this evening.

Kirk, who'll be a junior this fall for Coach Richard Quick's defending Pac-10 Cardinal team, splashed to a pr and meet-record 1:09.26 to win the 100 breast. Coughlin raced to history's third-best performance in the 100 backstroke — just .01 off her American record 1:00.18 from last summer's World Championships in Fukuoka — and .03 off the world-record of 1:00.16 by
China's He Cihong.

Kirk's swim bettered her old pr of 1:09.42 from the Janet Evans Invitational last July at USC. The Cardinal star — who also holds American/NCAA records
in the 100-200 yard breast events — said she was pleased with her swim, especially in view of the fact that she's "really been putting in the work this summer.

"I"ve been training really hard lately. I trained on Friday morning, but it was important for me to do well while I was training. [Coach Richard] Quick's been doing his best to make me really tired and it's worked. I'm delighted to have done my personal best," Kirk said.

Second was Cal's Staciana Stitts, a Sydney Olympian who touched in 1:10.71.

The fastest American this year is Olympic champ Megan Quann, who won at spring Nationals with a 1:08.37 after a 1:08.09 in the prelims. The world leader is Australia's "Lethal" Leisel Jones with her NR 1:07.31 from the Australian Age Group Championships in April at the Sydney Olympic Pool.

Kirk and Quann will have their "showdown at the ol' water hole" in Ft. Lauderdale in six weeks at the U.S. Nationals, and then both could be taking on Ms Jones a week later in the Pan-Pacs at Yokohama — as well as perhaps China's Qi Hui, world 200 breast record-holder, Japan's Masami Tanaka and South Africa's Sarah Poewe.

(Of course, Mlles. Kristy Kowal and Amanda Beard may have some thoughts on who's going to make the plane to Yokohama too but …)

Coughlin, who Friday evening became the fourth-fastest American ever in the 100 free with her pr and meet-record 54.93, gave short shrift to the field in the 100 back with her world-leading 1:00.19. The Cal junior now has history's second-, third- and seventh-best performances with her 1:00.18 leadoff leg on the U.S. gold medal-winning team at the World Championships, tonight's 1:00.19 and a 1:00.37 that won her the individual gold at Fukuoka.

"I always swim well at this meet," she said and it's true. At last summer's competition she swam prs in the 100 back and free, presaging her perfomance
at the World Championships. "It was hard for me to be so close to the world record a second time but it'll come. You think about everything you could have done differently to get that record. I missed my wall so I
didn't get the push I wanted. But that's good that I swam so fast. I know I can go faster."

At NCAAs last March in Austin, she won the 100 yard back in 49.97, making her the first (and only) woman ever under 50.0.

Runner-up was her former Cal teammate, Haley Cope, who clocked 1:02.86.

"Traditionally, I don't swim well here, so I'm stoked to finish second," Cope said. Then, taking a playful swipe at her teammate, added: Natalie isn't going to swim tomorrow wo maybe I can win one" [referring to the 50 free].

*   *   *    *    *

Stanford scored another victory when 400 IM runner-up Markus Rogan mounted the victory podium via his 2:00.99 200 back win over Cardinal teammate Randall Bal's 2:03.82.

The latter got a gold of his own a bit later when he won the 50 freestyle.

Rogan, silver medalist for Austria at Fukuoka in the 200 back with his pr-NR 1:58.07, hopes to get down to the 1:55-56 range at the European Championships in Berlin. Then he'd like to make a run at Americans Aaron Peirsol (world recored-holder) and Lenny Krayzelburg (former recored-holder) at next summer's World Championships in Spain.

Rogan will have an earlier shot at Piersol during next year's NCAAs as the NOVA star is joining Texas coach Eddie Reese's treble-defending national champs this fall in Austin.

Club Wolverine's Klete Keller, double-defending NCAA 500 free champ who has given up his collegiate eligibility to train for Athens with Michigan coach
Jon Urbancek, didn't win the 400 free this evening –but he did swim the fastest time.

How so?

Simple. Keller qualified tenth in the morning heats but at night went 3:54.69 to win the consols and thus best the winning time of Calgary's Rick Say (3:55.91).

"This morning I just messed around," explained Keller.
"I underestimted the field, and wound up ninth (actually, tenth) thanks to a disappointing morning swim. It's embarrassing. I'm the American record-holder in this event, and I swim in the 'B' final."

Similar to Friday evening, Canada had three winners tonight with Jessica Deglau, 400 free champ, taking the 200; flyer Mike Mintenko winning the 100 and Say the 400 free. The University of British Columbia also won the women's 800 free relay.

The USA's Andrea Cassidy, swimming unattached, won the 400 IM to complete the competition. She outtouched UBC's Kelly Doody, 4:54.24-4:55.72.

— Bill Bell

RESULTS

35TH SANTA CLARA INVITATIONAL
GEORGE HAINES INTERNATIONAL SWIM CENTER
SANTA CLARA, CA., June 29

50 M Pool

* Meet Record

Event 13  WOMEN'S 400 M IND.
