{"id":390652,"date":"2019-08-16T14:29:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T21:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=390652"},"modified":"2019-08-16T19:10:27","modified_gmt":"2019-08-17T02:10:27","slug":"kenna-smallegange-wins-at-uana-junior-open-water-swimming-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kenna-smallegange-wins-at-uana-junior-open-water-swimming-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenna Smallegange, James Plage Win at UANA Junior Open Water Swimming Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">A 16-year-old\u2019s dramatic gold-medal effort led the way for Team Canada on Day 1 of the UANA Junior Open Water Swimming Championships Friday as <\/span><span lang=\"en-us\"><strong>Kenna Smallegange<\/strong>, of the Burlington, Ont., Aquatic Devilrays, won the 14-17 year-old women\u2019s 7.5 kilometre race in a photo finish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Her time of 1:38:24.37 was slightly faster than runner-up <strong>Elizabeth Fort<\/strong> of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">\u201cKenna Smallegange swam a very mature race, slowly working her way through to first position and using the race tactics that she has been taught to great effect,\u201d Perry said.<\/span><span lang=\"en-us\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">\u201cIt took the judges a long time to confirm the result because it was so close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The other winners were USA&#8217;s <strong>James Plage<\/strong> in the men&#8217;s 14-17 7.5K (1:31.33.32), <strong>Nico Hernandez-Tome<\/strong> (2:02.16.54) in the men&#8217;s 20U 10K and USA&#8217;s <strong>Sylvia Stewart-Bates<\/strong> (2:13.56.33) in the women&#8217;s 20U 10K.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Smallegange said she was confident heading into the race and the tranquil weather was perfect for racing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Smallegange was surprised when Fort opened a large lead early in the race, but she was undeterred. She made up ground quickly and by the fifth lap the Canadian surged ahead then \u201cheld on the rest of the way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Smallegange said she learned a lot from the race and predicted it will go a long way in helping her develop skills that will be used in future competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\"><strong>Kate Sullivan<\/strong> of Mount Pearl, N.L., finished seventh in the field of 13 racers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Meanwhile, <strong>Raben Dommann<\/strong> of North Vancouver, B.C., recorded a third-place finish in the men\u2019s 20-and under 10-kilometre race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Dommann, who also competed at FINA World Championships and most recently the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, was pleased with his showing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Dommann said he enjoyed racing and working with teammate<strong> Patrick Hussey<\/strong> of Pointe-Claire, Que., who finished sixth in the field of 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">\u201cIt is always an honour to represent Canada internationally and getting all this race experience at a young age will only help me in my long-term development,\u201d Dommann said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">\u201cI feel like I know a lot of theory on open water swimming so it\u2019s getting the opportunity to practice all the different tactics that really helps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Coach Perry said Dommann\u2019s victory demonstrated how much he has learned and progressed during his hectic summer racing season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Overall, he said the team has been professional, calm and drama-free and that showed in the way they were able to execute their respective races.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_4404893402413305672Standard\"><span lang=\"en-us\">Kyla Ross of Victoria placed second in a field of eight in the women\u2019s 20-and-under 10-km race.
