He was 17.<\/p>\n<p>He swam a 4:11.09 to get under Tom Dolan&#8217;s 4:11.76 from the 2000 Olympic Games. Vendt was second, also getting under the record with a 4:11.27.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps would go on to break the 400 IM record seven more times in his career, including the 4:03.84 that landed him gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI knew it would come down to the last stroke,\u201d Phelps told <em>Swimming World <\/em>at the time of his meeting with Vendt. \u201cWhoever got his hand on the wall first would have the world record. And I hate to lose. I just <i>hate<\/i>\u00a0to lose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Vendt\u2019s comments were similar: \u201cI knew whoever won the race would get the world record,\u201d Vendt said. \u201cThis was the best race ever, and I\u2019m happy to have done my best time by over two seconds.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe bring out the best in each other,\u201d Phelps said.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps and Vendt went on to go 1-2 at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens two years later.<\/p>\n<h3>Race Results<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Michael Phelps, 4:11.09<\/li>\n<li>Erik Vendt, 4:11.27<\/li>\n<li>Tom Wilkens, 4:17.05<\/li>\n<li>Kevin Clements, 4:18.59<\/li>\n<li>Robert Margalis, 4:20.62<\/li>\n<li>Brendan Neligan, 4:22.85<\/li>\n<li>Eric Shanteau, 4:24.23<\/li>\n<li>Eric Donnelly, 4:24.28<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Swimming World&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em><strong>Phillip Whitten\u00a0<\/strong>wrote at the time:<\/p>\n<p>This was the one everyone was waiting for. This was the race about which Michael Phelps said yesterday: \u201cErik and I have something special for you tomorrow.\u201d And as they left the ready room, the two good friends and rivals turned to each other and said: \u201cLet\u2019s give them something to cheer about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They did. In spades. But strangely, the hush of anticipation extended through the first 100 meters, the crowd seemingly holding its collective breath. When Phelps hit the wall at 55.97, the crowd erupted, and the cheering just grew louder.<\/p>\n<p>Vendt finished his fly leg in 58.57 \u2013 right where he wanted to be.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, Phelps extended his lead by almost a second in the backstroke, turning in a mind-boggling 1:59.38. In 1964, <strong>Don Schollander<\/strong> became the first man to break two minutes for 200 meters\u00a0<i>freestyle<\/i>, going on to win four gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics and becoming the most popular athlete of the \u201964 Games. And here was Phelps, swimming 1:59 for 100 meters of fly and backstroke\u2026on his way to a 400 IM.<\/p>\n<p>But Vendt is nothing if not one of the toughest competitors on the planet. And he came storming back, splitting 1:10.87 and picking up three seconds on Phelps in breaststroke as the capacity crowd was on its feet, screaming.<\/p>\n<p>And Vendt wasn\u2019t done. On the first 50 meters of the freestyle leg, Vendt actually took the lead from Phelps, turning at 350 meters with a lead of 14-hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n<p>But Phelps was far from through. He pushed off the wall, performed six quick underwater dolphin kicks, and was back in front. With 25 meters to go, Vendt had hauled his rival in, once again, and retaken a tiny lead. \u201cI though I had it then,\u201d Vendt said later. So did much of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Phelps dug deeper and inched ahead. The two men surged for the wall, and it was the 17 year-old phenom who hit the pads first.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd erupted\u2026and the cheering went on and on.<\/p>\n<h3>World Record
