For many the image of paradise is being surrounded by a cloud of sunscreen while lazing by the ocean or pool before slipping into the water to escape the sweltering heat. However, competitive swimmers are very in-touch with the reality that swimming waits for no kind of weather, no matter the time of year (well, unless there\u2019s lightning).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A steadily rising subset of swimming takes the idea of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cooling off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the extreme. Welcome to the sport of ice swimming.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What Is Ice Swimming?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice swimming is exactly what it sounds like: swimming in very <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cold water. The sport has been around for a while, primarily as a cultural and wellness movement in parts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/life\/2019\/02\/19\/young-russians-seek-health-highs-in-ice-swimming.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, the official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaliceswimming.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Ice Swimming Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IISA) was only founded a decade ago by South African ice swimmer <\/span><strong>Ram Barkai<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Now 61 years old, Barkai has competed in 11 ice miles and 14 ice kilometers in various locations around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice swimming can take place in open water or in \u201cpools\u201d.\u00a0 This year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/international-ice-swimming-associations-2019-murmansk-world-championship-event-recap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IISA\u2019s World Championships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were held in a 10-lane, 25-meter pool that was created by cutting thick slabs of ice off the top of Russian Lake <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semyonovskaya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>What Are the Rules?<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ICE SWIMMING World Championships HIGHLIGHTS 2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/exxvLh_nHxU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice swimming competitions are heavily regulated to make sure that all events are standardized and safe.\u00a0 Typical ice swimming distances are one mile and one kilometer. Depending on the type of competition, shorter races are allowed in order to resemble events in a typical swim meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from distance, temperature is one of the key aspects that defines ice swimming. The temperature must be below five degrees Celsius or below 41 degrees Fahrenheit to qualify.\u00a0 To test the temperature, three thermometers are submerged in the water for five minutes. All the thermometers must have readings below the maximum temperatures mentioned above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strict guidelines regulate an ice swimmer&#8217;s ensemble. Absolutely no wetsuits are allowed. Yes, you read that correctly. A regular swimsuit, cap and goggles are the main uniform. Swimmers can wear a safety belt, ear plugs, nose plugs and mouth guard for protection. These are only a few of the rules and regulations.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you want to learn more, click <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaliceswimming.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/IISA-Swimming-Rules-and-Regulations.pdf\">here<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Safety and Risks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though many ice swimmers herald cold water swimming as a way to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global\/2018\/dec\/23\/the-big-chill-the-health-benefits-of-swimming-in-ice-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deal with pain, depression and other ailments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this sport is quite literally not for the faint of heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can imagine, swimming in water as cold as ice poses unique health risks. Barkai&#8217;s calm demeanor in cold water is the exception, not the rule. Most people&#8217;s heart rates spike dramatically due to the adrenaline released from the extreme temperature drop. For someone with cardiac issues, this type of competition could be deadly. Not to mention the complications of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/what-is-sipe-and-why-should-open-water-swimmers-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIPE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more importantly hypothermia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IISA requires all participants to undergo medical examination and fill out extensive medical paperwork. An on-site medical officer will brief athletes on the signs and symptoms of hypothermia. This same medical officer is also in charge of monitoring swimmers after the race. They watch for signs of hypothermia or other potential health problems before releasing the swimmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Freezing Cold Fun and Freedom<\/b><\/h3>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ICE SWIM | Feeling the power from the cold\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eEDmZlVCCzc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISSA has over 2000 registered swimmers. These few and proud swimmers hail from all over the world to partake in one of the most extreme sports out there. So while ice swimming comes with risks, many enjoy the mental rewards and physical health benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSwimming cold water has become my passion.\u00a0 The ice was the icing on the cake. I find the ice extreme.\u00a0 I\u2019m attracted to extreme challenges. No doubt, swimming in ice is a dangerous sport.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not adrenaline junkie, polar bear type of experience, you actually have to swim one kilometer extremely fast in water under five degrees in just speedos, goggles and a cap.\u00a0 These are the rules,\u201d Barkai says in the first video posted above.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a passion in his words, a weight. Still, l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ike any extreme sport, many people won\u2019t quite understand the purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn&#8217;t deter ice swimmers or the ISSA. Right now, one of the organization\u2019s main goals is to bring ice swimming into the Winter Olympic Games.
