Carter shocked a strong field at the USA Swimming meet, finishing third behind Yugoslav Olympian Michael Cavic (54.40), Swimming World<\/i>'s "High School Swimmer of the Year" for 2002, and Mexican Olympian Josh Ilika (55.58).<\/p>\n
Carter's 56.73 was 8-tenths of a second faster than the world and national 40-44 age group record of 57.53 he set last summer at Masters Nationals, and only 5- tenths of a second off of Carter\u2019s lifetime best.<\/p>\n
Carter, a collegiate All-American and graduate of the University of Tennessee, is attempting to qualify for the Olympic Trials in July of 2004.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel great about my improvements. Last summer most people didn\u2019t think I could get much faster and it\u2019s really cool getting a year older and that much faster. I know this isn\u2019t suppose to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carter who has been training with Southern California Aquatics Masters (SCAQ) recently returned to USC Trojans to train under Mark Schubert and Larry Liebowitz for the summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy goal this summer is to qualify for Summer Nationals in Fort Lauderdale in the 100 fly (55.99) and 200 fly (2:04.69). I lived and coached at the Hall of Fame for a many years and it would be great to swim at a meet like that in front of a home crowd. If not, I move to the 45-49 age group for Masters Nationals and hope to set a few records in Cleveland. As the college kids tell me, no matter how the summer season turns out, at my age, \u201cit\u2019s all good.\u201d<\/p>\n
