Now both advance to the biggest tournament in the sport, no matter who wins today\u2019s title tilt. For the Canadians, it\u2019s their first trip to the Olympics since a seventh-place finish at the Athens Games in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Not that there was any surprise as to who the Pan American finalists would be.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canadians-and-americans-will-meet-in-both-womens-and-mens-pan-american-water-polo-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Canadians and Americans Will Meet in Both Women\u2019s and Men\u2019s Pan American Water Polo Fina<\/em><\/a>l]<\/p>\n<p>In an indication of just how dominant both programs have been in this tournament and in the hemisphere, in the two-decade history of women\u2019s water polo play at the PanAms, only the Americans and the Canadians have made it to the finals. And, before four straight titles won by the U.S., in 1999, Canada won the inaugural women\u2019s Pan American water polo title.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the two will face each other for a sixth straight finals match-up, and the Canadians will look to snap two streaks; four straight title defeats and an American winning streak that is the longest on record.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Canada 19, Brazil 5<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Friday morning play, head coach <strong>David<\/strong> <strong>Paradelo\u2019s<\/strong> squad quickly broke out to a 4-1 first period lead and were never headed in decisively beating a young Brazilian squad. Led by <strong>Axelle Crevier&#8217;s<\/strong> four goals on five shots as well as hat tricks by <strong>Joelle Bekhazi<\/strong>, <strong>Monika Eggens<\/strong> and <strong>Shae Fournier<\/strong>, the Canadians gained their fifth-straight victory here in Lima.<\/p>\n<p>The win did not immediately qualify the Canadians for Tokyo; Team USA had to follow through\u2014as expected\u2014and beat Cuba. Bekhazi, another long-time national team player, is a year younger at 32. Many of the younger players have been playing with the national team since 2011. They\u2019ve waited a long time for this moment\u2014so it was not a problem to wait a bit longer for an American victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tough not to get emotional because we know the reality of the sport\u2014we told the girls we couldn\u2019t celebrate the same way as if we just won [a match] for qualification,\u201d he said. \u201cBut at the same time, we can\u2019t hold back emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is still a finals match to be played and\u2014perhaps\u2014a score to be settled between these two programs whose history dates back to the earliest days of women\u2019s international polo, when a handful of teams had to fight each other\u2014and FINA\u2014to earn a place in the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Goalie and captain <strong>Jessica Gaudreault<\/strong>, who spent four years at Indiana facing many of the players on the U.S. national team, knows that it will take a supreme effort to blunt the Americans\u2019 success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always a big rivalry between the two of us,\u201d she said after the match. \u201cWe\u2019ve been beating teams by 15, 20, so [this is] the best opportunity to give them a really good game.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>USA 31, Cuba 7<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After a string of games against sub-par opponents, the American got to put on their \u201cA\u201d game today against a Cuban side that was game but ultimately over-matched. Behind five goals by <strong>Makenzie Fischer<\/strong> and four apiece from <strong>Stephanie Haralabidis<\/strong> and <strong>Maddie Musselman<\/strong>, Team USA burst out to a 9-2 first-period lead then kept the Cubans at bay for the win.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-women-dominate-peru-advance-to-2019-pan-am-semifinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>As Expected, USA Women Dominate Peru, Advance to 2019 Pan Am Semifinals against Cuba<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>U.S. goalie <strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong> scored for the third-straight day, but this time it was from her cage and not by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/krikorian-johnson-worlds-top-polo-goalie-plays-field-because-of-ioc-possible-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">playing the field<\/a>. Taking advantage of the new rules which include traveling past mid-tank, Cuban goalie <strong>Mairelis Zunzunegui Morgan<\/strong> joined the attack and misfired with seconds left in the first period. It left Johnson just enough time to heave the ball the length of the pool and score, the first time in her illustrious American career that she\u2019s accomplished this feat.<\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/on-the-record-with-boris-margeta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>On The Record with Boris Margeta, Renowned Referee, at the 2019 Pan American Games<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>USA played tough defense against <strong>Mayelin Bernal Villa<\/strong>, who came into the game with 15 goals but was held scoreless until three minutes remained in the match and the score was 28-5.<\/p>\n<p>There were moments of success for the Cubans against the Americans. <strong>Madonni Ch\u00e1vez Pe\u00f1a<\/strong> scored a hat trick, beating Johnson with high-quality shots. Photo Courtesy: Marcos Brindicci \/ Lima 2019<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the match, U.S. Head Coach <strong>Adam Krikorian<\/strong> expressed confidence that his players would rise to the occasion of a championship match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, we might be a little bit rusty at times,\u201d he said about how the tournament&#8217;s uneven competition might impact his team\u2019s play.<\/p>\n<p>Then, underscoring why the Americans remain the gold standard in the sport, Krikorian added: \u201cThis group is not just talented, they\u2019re very experienced. They\u2019ve played a ton of games this summer, a ton of games in their careers. Not that I\u2019m going to encourage them to turn it off and on but, they can.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey love a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, USA\u2019s all-world goalie who has now added scoring to her repertoire, was clear that fun time was over\u2014and that beating the Canadians is always a priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know their players, we know their game\u2014we know they want to beat us too,\u201d she said. \u201cGoing against Canada is something that always ignites that flame in us\u2014we always want to beat them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LIMA, PERU.
