Did You Know? 1932 Olympic Gold Medalist Clare Dennis<\/span><\/h2>\n

On Aug. 9, 1932, Australia\u2019s Clare Dennis won an Olympic gold medal in the 200 meter breaststroke in Los Angeles. But just three days earlier during prelims, the 16-year-old\u2014the youngest female swimmer at the Games\u2014was almost disqualified for wearing a suit that \u201cshowed too much skin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wearing a wool-and-silk costume made by Australian manufacturer Speedo, Dennis qualified first in 3:08.2\u2014the fastest time by two-and-a-half seconds and three seconds under the Olympic record. The suit was very low-cut at the back, exposing her shoulders, and a protest was lodged. FINA, however, quickly approved the suit\u2014noting that it conformed to all standards set out in the Olympic rules\u2014and the protest was dismissed.<\/p>\n
