Q&A with California Baptist University’s Coach Rick Rowland<\/span><\/h2>\n

After success at the highest NAIA and NCAA D-II levels, California Baptist University coach Rick Rowland\u2014a man committed to his faith and love of aquatic sports\u2014is leading the Lancer charge into NCAA Division I.<\/p>\n

Credentials<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Pepperdine University, B.S., physical education and kinesiology, 1981; Azusa Pacific, M.A., education, 1999
\n\u2022 Started the California Baptist University men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and water polo programs in 1999
\n\u2022 CBU head men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming coach, 1999-present
\n\u2022 CBU head men\u2019s water polo coach, 1999-2015; head women\u2019s water polo coach, 2000-07
\n\u2022 Coach, Santa Margarita High School, 1993-98
\n\u2022 Coach, Villa Park High School, 1988-93
\n\u2022 Men\u2019s assistant swimming and water polo coach, Pepperdine University, 1982-85
\n\u2022 Rowland\u2019s CBU male swimmers have won 67 individual national titles and 14 relay crowns; the women, 44 and 6
\n\u2022 85 CBU male and 80 female swimmers have won All-America honors, while eight of his water polo players have also earned that distinction
\n\u2022 CSCAA National Invitational Championship Coach of the Year, 2019<\/p>\n

As head coach of California Baptist University, Rick Rowland\u2019s men\u2019s teams have won four NAIA national championships (2006-09), while his women have captured five team titles (2005-08, 2011). He was named NAIA Coach of the Year for men in 2001 and 2008, and for women in 2001, 2006 and 2011. In 2018, the Lancers were NCAA Division II runners-up.<\/p>\n

Q. SWIMMING WORLD:<\/span><\/strong> To what extent was your father a coaching mentor?
\nA. COACH RICK ROWLAND:<\/span><\/strong> My father, Rick Rowland Sr., was a strong influence. He was my age group swim coach as a 10-and-under while swimming in Santa Barbara and my swim and water polo coach at Pepperdine University from 1977-81. Following graduation, I was his assistant. During my college summers, I cut my coaching teeth with him and guest coaches such as Mark Schubert and Monte Nitzkowski at the Rick Rowland Swim and Water Polo Camp. Working with my father helped open doors for me at California Baptist University.<\/p>\n
