The second day of the 2019 Phillips 66 US National Championships kicks off with six events in the morning session from Stanford.<\/p>\n

The 200 free opened the competition, with stars like Allison Schmitt<\/strong>, Ryan Lochte<\/strong> and Luca Urlando<\/strong> on the heat sheets for the event.<\/p>\n

The 200 breast followed, featuring Madisyn Cox<\/strong> and Zoe Bartel<\/strong>. The men’s race will feature Reece Whitley<\/strong> and Jonathan Tybur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The 200 backstroke closes the session. The women’s event will feature Beata Nelson, Asia Seidt<\/strong> and Lucie Nordmann<\/strong>, while the men’s race features Carson Foster<\/strong>, Bryce Mefford<\/strong> and Austin Katz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 200 Free<\/h2>\n

The second day of nationals continued with more teen star power, but it wasn\u2019t Regan Smith<\/strong> this time, though she did swim the event.<\/p>\n

Fifteen-year-old Claire Tuggle<\/strong> took the top seed in the event with a 1:58.21. It is the fourth-fastest 15-16 age group time in U.S. history.<\/p>\n

Tuggle\u2019s time for her age only trails Missy Franklin<\/strong> (1:55.06), Katie Ledecky<\/strong> (1:56.32) and Dagny Knutson<\/strong> (1:57.73).<\/p>\n

Tuggle, of Clovis, used a 27.81 first 50 to build a lead, then closed with a 30.26 to earn the top seed.<\/p>\n

Paige Madden<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:58.69.<\/p>\n

There was a tie for the third seed with American record-holder Allison Schmitt<\/strong> and Brooke Forde<\/strong> each finishing in 1:58.75.<\/p>\n

Sun Devil Aquatics\u2019 Cierra Runge<\/strong> took the fifth seed (1:59.36), followed by Club Wolverine\u2019s Gabby DeLoof<\/strong> (1:59.46), Alto\u2019s Katie Drabot<\/strong> (1:59.51) and Sun Devils Aquatics’ Erica Lanning<\/strong> (1:59.97).<\/p>\n

With Schmitt, Runge and Lanning, three from Sun Devil Aquatics will be in the final.<\/p>\n

Smith, who won the 200 butterfly last night, finished ninth and will be in the B final. She finished in 2:00.07.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 200 freestyle<\/h2>\n

Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> did not compete in the 200 free, though he was on the heat sheets this morning. USA Swimming officials confirmed he is planning to swim this weekend.<\/p>\n

Ryan Lochte<\/strong> did compete and finished 37th<\/sup> (1:50.25).<\/p>\n

But it was Kieran Smith<\/strong> who took the top seed in 1:46.21 to finish a full second ahead of the second-seeded Elijah Winnington<\/strong> of Australia (1:47.21).<\/p>\n

Maxime Rooney<\/strong> took the third seed in 1:47.32, followed by Jordan Pothain<\/strong> (1:47.63), Patrick Callan<\/strong> (1:47.68), Trenton Julian<\/strong> (1:47.73), Dean Farris<\/strong> (1:47.76) and Mitch D\u2019Arrigo<\/strong> (1:47.79).<\/p>\n

Luca Urlando<\/strong> finished 15th in 1:49.12 to make the B final.<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 200 Breast<\/h2>\n

After scratching the 200 free to start the session, Madisyn Cox<\/strong> used her extra energy in the 200 breast to take the top seed.<\/p>\n

Cox finished in 2:26.67 to earn the top seed by more than a half second.<\/p>\n

Gillian Davey<\/strong> took the second seed in 2:27.31, to hold off Abby Arens<\/strong> (2:27.37) and Jenna Strauch<\/strong> (2:27.39).<\/p>\n

Kate Douglass<\/strong> took the fifth seed in 2:28.17 just ahead of Michigan\u2019s Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (2:28.19).<\/p>\n

Ellie Andrews<\/strong> (2:28.48) and Anna Keating<\/strong> (2:28.56) rounded out the A final.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 200 Breast<\/h2>\n

Daniel Roy<\/strong> of Alto Swim Club used a strong back half of his race to take the top seed in the 200 breast.<\/p>\n

After a 30.44 split in the first 50, Roy split a 32.36 to turn the tide, then had back-to-back 33 splits to close out the race in 2:09.87.<\/p>\n

Cal\u2019s Reece Whitley<\/strong> had a strong front half and took the second seed in 2:10.81. His 29.37 split in the first 50 was one of the fastest in the event.<\/p>\n

Daniel Cave<\/strong> of Australia took the third seed in 2:10.38, followed by Joshua Matheny<\/strong> (2:11.43), Caspar<\/strong> Corbeau<\/strong> (2;12.15), Brandon Fischer<\/strong> (2:12.16), Craig Benson<\/strong> (2:12.43) and Nicholas Quinn<\/strong> (2:12.54).<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 200 Back<\/h2>\n

World record holder Regan Smith<\/strong> was not in the 200 back during prelims. She had decided to do the 200 free instead.<\/p>\n

There were still some big names competing in the race.<\/p>\n

Kentucky\u2019s Asia Seidt<\/strong> missed out on the A final in the 200 butterfly but bounced back in a big way on Thursday, taking the top seed in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n

Seidt used a balanced race to finish in 2:10.51 and hold off to Alto Swim Club teammates \u2014\u00a0Lucie Nordmann<\/strong> (2:10.55) and Erin Voss<\/strong> (2:10.57).<\/p>\n

Emma Atkinson<\/strong> took the fourth seed in 2:10.75, followed by Cavalier\u2019s Emma Seiberlich<\/strong> (2:11.07).<\/p>\n

Fifteen-year-old Natalie Mannion<\/strong> took the sixth seed in 2:11.25.<\/p>\n

Michigan\u2019s Chloe Hicks<\/strong> and Abi Wilde<\/strong>r tied for the seventh spot at 2:11.76.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Wisconsin\u2019s Beata Nelson<\/strong> missed out on the A final, finishing in 2:12.68.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 200 Back<\/h2>\n

Austin Katz<\/strong> used a strong first half to take the top seed in the 200 back, finishing in 1:56.23. He had the top seed by nearly a second as he looks to claim a national title in the finals.<\/p>\n

Katz had the top first 50 split in 27.37 and used a 29.36 second split to pull in front for good.<\/p>\n

Shaine Casas<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:57.09, followed by Cal\u2019s Bryce Mefford<\/strong> (1:57.59) and Sun Devil\u2019s Zachary Poti<\/strong> (1:57.72).<\/p>\n

Clark Beach<\/strong> took the fifth spot in 1:58.06, followed by Rays\u2019 Carson Foster<\/strong> (1:58.45), Louisville\u2019s Nicholas<\/strong> Albiero<\/strong> (1:58.57) and Wyatt Davis<\/strong> (1:58.89).<\/p>\n
